T-Mobile is launching a new campaign starting next week that aims squarely at Sprint customers. Taking some jabs at Sprint by pointing out how their customers have “suffered” and had to put up with both “the Framily” and the “slowest nationwide LTE network.” T-Mobile is offering a free upgrade to unlimited data for one year when existing T-Mobile customers refer someone to the Uncarrier. Although focused on Sprint, the offer applies to both AT&T and Verizon customers as well. The free upgrade will apply to both the new T-Mobile customer that ports their number over and the existing T-Mobile customer that served as the referral source. If a T-Mobile customer already has an unlimited Simple Choice plan, T-Mobile will give them a $10 per month credit for one year.

In reference to a move earlier this week in which Sprint is offering new plans for new customers while not offering anything to existing customers,  T-Mobile John Legere says,

It continues to amaze me to see the old carriers failing to listen to their customers−or reward them for their loyalty. That arrogance and indifference has defined the U.S. wireless industry for too long. We’re changing all that. In fact, this entire Un-carrier consumer movement is built on the simple act of listening to customers.”

Likewise, T-Mobile's Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert notes that “Only a ‘carrier’ would be arrogant enough to make an offer limited only to new prospects, while forgetting their existing customers. The Un-carrier way is to give the best offers to your loyal customers – and that’s what we’re doing again today.”

With an apparent merger between Sprint and T-Mobile seemingly off the table once again, it looks like the two companies are ready to engage in some pretty fierce competition. T-Mobile has been trying to stir the industry pot for a while now and John Legere seems to be genuinely interested in changing how wireless service works for customers, so they likely will have the advantage while Sprint gets up to speed. Meanwhile, we will watch to see whether AT&T and Verizon move to respond to the new offers or are content to sit on the sidelines and see what shakes out.
