One of the biggest features we're expecting Samsung to adopt in the Galaxy S5 is the fingerprint scanner. Everyone is pretty much expecting it's going to happen, and we've even gotten some insight on what it's going to be able to do, but the latest rumors point towards the S5 trying to do something that many companies have failed at; a mobile payment system.

Apparently, Samsung and PayPal are working together closely to try and create some type of wallet system that will become a standard for consumers and retail stores. Samsung already has a wallet app developed, although it's limited by country availability (much like Google Wallet) so Samsung already has some of the foundation ready. Adding in a fingerprint scanner for security and PayPal for the heavy lifting on the money handling side of things could really be what Samsung needs to make something like this happen.

They're still going to have to deal with US carriers blocking anything that's not ISIS, and getting retail stores to adopt mobile payments is always going to be an uphill battle, but if any two companies have the money and power to make that happen, it's Samsung and PayPal.

If this pans out, I'm sure we'll hear more about it on the 24th when Samsung announces the Galaxy S5.

  1. “They’re still going to have to deal with US carriers blocking anything that’s not ISIS”

With KitKat and the changes with the virtual secure element, I don’t think the carriers can block this any longer. Google Wallet works out of the box now and should on any KitKat device with NFC on it.

    1. That’s a good point, but would it honestly surprise you if Verizon completely removed the tap-and-pay features in one of their smartphones in the future? I hope it happens as much as everyone else, but don’t put anything past big companies like AT&T and Verizon.

      1. Ahhh but that will be tough. In order to use Google app services, you agree to leave tap and pay in the Rom….. Good job Google!

      2. So haha…you’re pseudo right. The HTC One Kit Kat on AT&T has tap to pay. The LG G2, has it, but it’s disabled by LG. I think it will be unlocked and working via root. This could be a violation of Google TOS though.

        1. I’ve been hearing that it’s missing from the S4 and Note 3 updates on some carriers, too.
Trust me, I’d love for Google to strong arm carriers and OEMs into keeping tap to pay in the 4.4 updates, but I’m just not sure that’s going to work out.
