Devices With Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich Could Launch This October

Rumors are flying about Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich to be pushed up for release this October and the guys over at BGR say they have a credible source attesting to that fact.

A release with this date would mean Google is angling to slave off customers from coming out of contracts around the same time to make the move to Apple’s iPhone 5, expected to be released at a similar time.

Ice Cream Sandwich will offer a ton of updates to Honeycomb such as USB host support and movie/music rentals which we reported back in May.  The update is perhaps the most anticipated Android version yet, with many users chiming in on what features they would like to see.  As we reported here, Google execs said this would be Google’s “everywhere” OS for mobile phones, tablets and other connected devices and our readers were quick to let their opinion be known and post their wants and desires too.

So as the release of Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich seems closer than ever, what kinds of features are you expecting and keeping your fingers crossed for?

it has to have multi-user support or I won’t buy it.

I would think they would be better off worrying less about cutting off IPhone defections and just focusing on developing quality products for their users. I am anti Apple due to their corporate practices. I don’t want a feature because it counters an Apple feature, I want a feature because it is useful. TL;DR – don’t buy into tit for tat updates to cover opposition moves – just find out what customers want and build it.

@Alex, the only part which suggested google cares for syphning off apple’s customers is the time release for the update. Nowhere did it suggest the features being designed were merely mirrowing that of Apple’s, sure some features are very similar but that’s down to them being useful.

This isn’t a tit for tat update, it’s combining their mobile focussed OS with their tablet focussed OS as well as adding additional features, some of which may be features used in Apple products but that’s not the focus.

Build in Oulook/Exchange sync (not through gmail) that would work well for contacts, calendar, emails, tasks etc.

Thus – improved versions of tasks, calendar, calendar widget etc.

I want my phone to be a full-feature business device straight out of the box.

I can get the apps for pretty much everything else.

Make the ice-cream to gingerbread as Win7 was to Vista and I am sure most (including me) will be happy. Of course it should work as good on a smartphone as on a tablet.

Battery conservation and management. My Google Nexus S is ridiculously power hungry. Can’t get a full day’s use. And, yes, I already have the WiFi turned off, etc., etc. Maybe I’ll buy a bigger battery and back cover, except is doesn’t have the branding.
