Google Officially Announces Android 2.3, Gingerbread

We knew it was coming, but Google made their big announcement today: Android 2.3, Gingerbread, is now official.  It will make its first appearance on a phone on December 16th, but Google is making the OS available to developers right now.  Google also announced that they will be open-sourcing Gingerbread “in the coming weeks,” so expect to see more phones launching with the tasty new OS in the near future.

Some key features of Android 2.3 include:

  • UI Refinements – promising to improve speed and change the overall look
  • Keyboard enhancements – “faster, more intuitive text input”
  • One-touch word selection and copy/paste – Yay!
  • Improved power management – Anyone want better battery life?
  • More control over applications
  • You can get more details on exactly what Android brings to the table at Google’s website, but it sounds like Google is bringing a lot to the table. Now begins the dreaded wait period, as we all eagerly await the updates to OUR devices.
