In the weeks preceding the launch of a new version of Android, it is inevitable that developers try to take apps from the new builds and get them to work on older builds. This is a welcome practice for impatient users and those of us with outdated phones that may not receive the newest Android update. We recently posted downloads for the newest versions of Play Movies & TV and Play Games, and today we have a download for the stock Android 5.0 Lollipop messenger app.

Posted earlier today on AmongTech, the download is said to work perfectly, no root required. Users running Android 4.4 can simply download the .apk, install and voila, your portal for SMS and MMS just got a whole lot prettier thanks to Android's new Material Design. Hit the download link and let us know in the comments how it is working out for you.

  1. Hmmm… looks like post with the link wasn’t approved :( If there are any mods on, can you confirm re: whether posting Dropbox links to files (not warez or other illegitimate ones of course!) is ok/not ok? Just don’t want to step on any toes!

  2. Just tried posting a Dropbox link, seems like post is waiting longer than normal to be approved (sorry mods, didn’t mean to breach any guidelines!)

  3. Works great so far on Note 2 stock Kitkat. Minimalistic and fast! Actually like the coloured conversations!
Also has a pretty basic thing that the Samsung SMS app doesn’t have – you can actually swipe through all the images that have been sent/received as part of a conversation! And it doesn’t take 3-4 seconds to open a picture!
Wish it had a dark theme option :/

    1. Try textra, it’s material design as well and runs better than this with dark mode, and lots of good quick reply options. I’ll always be confused how googles own apps can perform so poorly compared to 3rd party apps. Hangouts and chrome specifically.

    2. can you attach photos through the app? force closes when i try to do that. stock kitkat GS4 so i assume we are very similar.

          1. I hear ya. Keep in mind it is a “pre” version; the actual version will probably work just fine.
Also for what it’s worth, I tried Textra (at another commenter’s suggestion when I was looking for a dark theme) and it’s everything this app is (with a dark theme!) Give it a whirl and it might tide you over until Messenger is ready for prime time! :)
I personally went back to hangouts; I actually like the added features (voip dialing) and having hangout and SMS messages in the same place. Now if hangouts on the web interface would also show the sms from my phone – well maybe that’s asking too much :) Looking forward to material makeover for Hangouts too!

  4. Works great on Note 2 running OmniRom 4.4.4.
So, new version of Hangouts out recently, but this is so much nicer with the material design.
If Hangouts isn’t getting Material soon, be switching back to this for SMS.

  5. When i push the attachments button it crashes (galaxy s4 4.4) also not sure i like the color choices (like pink for most of my messages!) Overall i like the material design

        1. I got around making a new message by going to contacts and clicking the text icon from there. Otherwise no solutions from what I have found…

    1. It replaces the stock messaging app. If you have a Nexus 5 then hangouts was the stock app so this would allow you to unbundle sms from hangouts but not replace since hangouts is a different animal.
