Google releases the official Hangouts v2 with SMS/MMS support to Google Play

Following up on their release of the new KitKat keyboard to Google Play earlier today, Google has also made the new Hangouts v2 available. The big news with this update is the incorporation of SMS/MMS messaging into the Hangouts platform. Some other improvements include support for a full set of built-in emojis, the ability to view animated GIFs, location sharing, and the ability to set a “mood” indicator ala Google+ for others to see.

If you are lucky enough to have a Nexus 5 with the new Hangouts already installed or if you happened to install the leaked version, you may still want to check for an update as it reportedly fixes a video calling issue. I have been sent photos through SMS but can’t download them. What do I do?

Play store shows the latest version, but it just install 1.2 version, not 2.0. Isn’t rolled out to every country?

i can’t get it to send a regular sms to someone who is not registered onhangouts, just a sms to tell them to get on hangouts

Something odd… I upgraded to the new Hangouts, and attached some pictures to a group Hangout (so not an MMS), but only recipients who had upgraded received them..
