Barge

When floating barges connected to Google were discovered in San Francisco and in Portland, Maine, many were trying to figure out just what Google may be up to. Initial speculation was in favor of the craft being some type of floating data center. Later reports indicated they would serve as large showrooms for new technology like Google Glass, complete with a party deck so Google could really amp up the experience for visitors. According to reports, Google has finally jumped into the fray regarding the barges, indicating they will be used as an “interactive space” according to this statement:

Google Barge … A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur? Sadly, none of the above. Although it’s still early days and things may change, we’re exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology.

That description seems like it could still be consistent with the earlier speculation about the space serving as a kind of showroom, but Google is obviously trying to downplay any kind of “party” connection or connotations.

Now that the barges have been discovered, the true use is bound to be discovered probably sooner that Google would have preferred. According to reports, work on the barges have been delayed due to Coast Guard requirements and with a government agency involved, that means documents exist that the public should be able to get access to.
