In a Q&A session with Jon Campos, Dallas FLEX User Group Manager and Adobe Community Professional, we got some pretty good info on up and coming features from Adobe for the Android platform. If you’re an Android developer, programmer, coder, or just a code geek, be sure to check out our rundown after the break, along with a small gallery of shots from the presentation.
Q: Is there any truth to the rumor that Best Buy will be marketing a self-branded, flash-capable tablet?
A: Adobe knows as much about it as the consumers, all they know is the rumors.
Q: When Adobe does their Adobe MAX announcement, will it be released at that time?
A: It will probably be announced as “coming soon”.
Q: Does the Adobe AIR runtime run on top of Java?
A: The Adobe AIR runtime runs natively, directly on top of the Android layer.
Q: How will AIR affect battery and power usage?
A: AIR still gets killed by memory limits, just like a 3rd layer app. With multi-screen development, when an app loses focus, AIR does not continue running at the same benchmarks, so it can continue without killing system resources. For instance, video calling goes down to about 1FPS when running in the background.
Q: How does Adobe AIR deal with Android intents?
A: AIR can handle native installers that plug into the Android base. By default, the option isn’t there, but it is being developed. Intent going out is supported, but not coming in.
Q: Is it possible to build a phone without the Java runtime, to keep it from interfering with AIR’s communications to the Android base?
A: There is the ability for AIR to run by itself… but I can’t talk a lot about it.
Some pretty good stuff here, folks. Be sure to stay tuned to TalkAndroid.com for more updates from the Big TX Android BBQ!
