Upgrade plans for Motorola devices to Android 2.1 and 2.2 released

Motorola recently released an update to their timeline for updates to their Android devices to 2.1 and 2.2 versions. The folks over at theunwired have made up a simple list of the “high- and lowlights” for these devices, which are:

North America

  • Droid X by Motorola (USA): Upgrade to Android 2.2 planned for late summer.
  • Devour (USA): Will not have a software upgrade to Android 2.1
  • Backflip, Cliq and Cliq XT (USA): Upgrade to Android 2.1 (testing in process) planned for late Q3/early Q4
    All Android 2.1 and 2.2 upgrades for Canada are under evaluation only. This includes the Backflip, Dext, Milestone, Quench

Europe

  • Milestone: Initial rollout of upgrade to Android 2.2 planned for Q4
  • Backflip and Dext: Will not have software upgrades to Android 2.1

Asia-Pacific

  • Milestone, Motoroi and Titanium (all Korea): Initial rollout of upgrades to Android 2.2 planned for Q4
  • Milestone (Asia-Pacific): Upgrade to Android 2.2 under evaluation
  • Backflip, Dext and Quench (all Asia-Pacific): Upgrades to Android 2.1 under evaluation

Latin America and Mexico

  • Milestone: Upgrade to Android 2.2 under evaluation
  • Backflip and Dext: Will not have software upgrades to Android 2.1

      the dext in the uk needs 2.1 update 2 sort out all the problems and it would just be unfair if it didnt get it

      That’s bullshit. I own a Cliq XT and I’ll be getting my update someday. But that’s a lot of handsets that they are dropping the ball on. I hate Apple and their closed garden bullshit but it looks like they win again. Motorola needs to leave a custom skin off unless they are willing to do the work to keep it up to date. While iPhones get a 3 year life span Motorola devices dont even get 6 months of support. Bullshit. If anything do an optional upgrade thru the website that updates all these phones to a non Motoblur 2.2. You owe it to your customers. Assholes.

      As an ex-milestone and a current Dext owner, i am ashamed to have tried to keep Motorola in business by parting with my hard earned cash. I think that customers in Europe are being put out to pasture with all their decisions, and the worrying thing is that with the Milestone Motorola said they were still debating with networks. This is a fully unlocked phone so I am pretty sure they were arguing with themselves. The other thing is that Dext owners were promised an update by the CEO…. No-one likes a liar, and I think Motorola will learn this the hardest way of all.

      I have to agree. This isn’t new news, the upgrade paths have been on motorola.com for months, and more to the point, the “under evaluation” for Canada has been that way since I first read the list in July. I fear I got burned again. I was one of those BB users that jumped because of the shoddy support from my telecom (never did get OS 5 officially.) Now it looks like I may be stuck in 1.5 limbo forever. Is there *any* phone/OS out there that won’t insult me and my buying power?

      Dext & Cliq are the same phone, I really don’t understand why they decide don’t roll out an upgrade for Mexico, the only reason that come to my mind it’s that Motorola think of us as second class customers & that’s just SUCKS!!!. It’s bad enough that we can’t have access to any of the hottest smartphone unless we import them & unlock them & now this!!!!! That’s bullshit.

      I am so bullshit about the upgrade for the backflip already. When i bought the phone it said upgradable 2.0. Come to find out they promised Q2 upgrade. Then Q3. Now im hearing Q4. Everybody that got a backflip shold be given an option to trade their piece of shit phone in for another upgrade. I dont for the life of me understand why yahoo was incorporated into the phone…enough is enough. my phone is useless with 1.5 and I am fuming about it. EVERYONE WITH A BACKFLIP GET ON THE PHONE WITH YOUR PROVIDER NOW AND LET THEM KNOW HOW LOYAL YOU FEEL AS A CUSTOMER. It would tie up the phone lines for at&t forever and then maybe they can see what it is like waiting and waiting and waiting for their lines to free up like we keep waiting and waiting for our simple upgrade. DON’T MAKE PROMISES YOU CAN NOT DELIVER!!!!!!! Anyone else feeling me?

      Of course its not acceptable. There are fewer apps that are compatible with android 1.5. Im using a Mexican Dext, so literally motorola has kicked us in the balls. Thanks moto for this “awesome” experience, that i would not forget when the time for upgrading my contract comes.

      Dext user in europe here, moto have completely shafted us I will never get another of their products, remember the experience of dext users around the world, you could be next. Do yourselves a big favour and next time you need a handset don’t go moto.

      Unacceptable, what about the Mexican marked who bought DEXT based on the promise of an update… Motorola, you are now the bad guy and that means a lot of clients going with your competency

      Motorola needs to get in touch with every carrier of the backflip and work something out so we can all get a new phone at upgrade price. I didn’t even want to buy the backflip because I have had nothing but problems with Motorola since day 1 but it was the first android release to at&t so of course i was eager to get it expecting the 2.0 upgrade like it even says on their website. Motorola…you already make garbage phones, i can live with that because I chose to buy the phone but take EVERY persons phone BACK before i FLIP. It wouldn’t have been such a big deal if it didn’t say upgradeable to 2.0 when i bought it but that is the ONLY reason i bought the phone so thanks for bending all your customers over and screwing them right in the asshole. It’s the best feeling when all my friends have turn by turn GPS with google maps and voice recognition and 20,000 other apps and all i can do is sit their and feel like a retard with a retarded phone. Is it really that hard to upgrade the firmware? I’m no expert but you would think 5 people at Motorola could sit down in a room and figure it out in 10 minutes. CALL YOUR CELL PHONE CARRIER TODAY AND TELL THEM YOU DEMAND A NEW UPGRADE SINCE THEY LIED TO US FROM THE START AND KEEP ON PUSHING THE DATE BACK AND BACK AND BACK. By the time they get 2.1 onto the phone I will be due for another upgrade and they will probably have 6G phones out by then. I get furious about this every single day and something needs to be done already. Europe, Mexico, America and even customers on the freakin moon should all have the upgrade at the same time and it should have already been done. I’m from the U.S.A. but it gets me just as mad thinking about anyone anywhere who is dealing with this crap. The only thing I can say on the positive side for Motorola is WOW one of your phones that i owned didn’t break in the first 6 months yet. GOOD JOB!!!! assholes.

      So, Motorola, you have my money for a Quench,and I’m left holding an obsolescent version 1.5 That means I’ll be buying a BETTER phone real soon… would you like some more money? Well I don’t trust you any more, so don’t bother. Time to look at HTC I suppose.

      Not sure a company that is in this business for such a long time can’t rollout critical updates to their exisisting customers. When new players like HTC, promptly upgrades to new updates, why in the world Mot take this much time. I believe Sanjay should be informed about such customer dissatifaction and he should address to reduce the overall lazyness of Mot think tank. Why in the world any customer will buy a mot phone if they will get the updates only after 6-9 months or even later after they have been released??? WAKE UP MOT PEOPLE..LEARN TO ADDRESS CUSTOMERS’ CONCERNS PROMPTLY AND SHEDD OFF YOUR ATTITUDE..YOU ARE SINKING..ATLEAST TRY TO COME OUT OF IT..

      Motorola discriminate against everyone outside the US when it comes to software upgrades. Don’t contract or buy into their defective products.

      I too own a Motorola quench and I was not very versed in the smart phone world when I purchased it but had a friend who told me the quench had good reviews. I went to Rogers and after looking at the quench and having the sales rep explain it all to me he informed me that it was running 2.1 this is the one thing that my friend had mentioned to me to check on. I asked the rep at least three times that he was sure that it was running 2.1 and he told me it was a new Motorola product and has the 2.1 running in it. Upon showing it to my friend after I had purchased it the first thing he did was look at the specs and told me to my disappointment that it only had 1.5 Like I said I was not very knowledgeable when I made the purchase and took the word of the sales rep. So this is my own fault for trusting him and I accept that but what I dont accept is the fact that upon checking into it my friend informed me that the phone was due for an upgrade to 2.1 in august. Well it is September and still no upgrade……what going on Motorola….I was told you were a great company and that your customers were priority one and it seems like you have pissed alot of them off and it would not surprise me if you lost a great percentage of them over this bullshit!!!!

      Ok so I called AT&T and explained to them that I have been waiting since April for this update and my phone is useless to me without 2.1. At that point they told me to call Motorola because they didn’t have an answer for me and also said if Motorola couldn’t help me to call AT&T customer relations. So when I called Motorola here is what i was told. “We are in the process of upgrading to 1.6 sometime in early quarter 4 and you can expect to see a 2.1 upgrade sometime after that but we do not have a date at this time because 1.6 is our main focus right now”. This was directly from the Supervisor at Motorola. So not only are they only testing a 1.6 update we still have NO FREAKING IDEA when 2.1 will be out. I called AT&T Customer Relations after talking to Motorola and I have been with them since 1993 with 3 phones on a family plan. I told them how I bought the phone expecting a 2.1 upgrade fast and that I just want another upgrade and to give them my backflip back. 2 Supervisors later could have cared less and I was promised a call back within 72 hours from someone above them. Well it has been a week and I have received no call and it seems like I am waisting my time now. Motorola, Get your facts straight and stop telling us you are rolling out 2.1 when in fact you are rolling out 1.6 before 2.1 even comes into play. AT&T I have lost all respect for you and I now see how you value a customer of almost 20 years. I do not know what I am going to do because I’m on a family plan and it is not totally up to me to leave at&t but this is what I found out from the Manufacturer and Carrier and I thought I would let everybody know my 8 hour phone experience. Everyone outside of the U.S. Motorola bent you over harder than anyone and that is not fair. I will never purchase any Motorola products again or listen to anything they say about the 2.1 upgrade. They are not only liars but also prejudice against any country besides the U.S. and just because I am from the U.S. does not make me any less angry for everyone getting screwed out of the upgrade totally. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? I am furious.

      Any Rogers Customers out there that want to form a group and start finding a way to be either given credit for thier phone or get Rogers to send a replacement phone ?
      I am so angry too but this is so typical US corporate thinking .. Nice to know they would have at their nieghbours to the South as well as the North.

      A got my motorola backflip and is a peace of shit I’m waiting for contract expire to have an iphone 4 android need a couple of more years to come close to iphone. My friend have a samsung galaxy and is cool but if you open many aplication have lags and freez android need os more stable

      Quarter 3 ended a while ago. I think it is safe to say “early quarter 4″ has come to an end. I think they meant 2011 and forgot to put the year this update is going to come out. With all the custom roms for 2.1 floating around now why can’t Motorola step up their game a little bit and get the freaking thing OTA already to U.S. customers. You have like 10 or more 2.1 roms made by Joe Shmoe’s on the web alone so the work has already been done for you Motorola. Why are you still being so lazy about this? I used to check everyday for an update since April. Now since I have rooted the phone, overclocked it and dumped all the crapware it was prepacked with it really isn’t that bad besides the fact I can’t use Google navigation without 1.6, so I have just stopped even check for updates besides once a week if that. Also if your not going to give an OTA update outside the U.S. at least put 2.1 online when you do release it so everybody can put it on their Backflip. Seems like you aren’t just slow and stupid but also prejudice against anyone living outside the U.S. I would be fuming even worse than I already am if I was not in the U.S. and knew I wasn’t getting an update OTA. I just can’t believe this is still going on, how many people they shit on and how no apology or anything has been publicly made. Its like the camera on my phone is stuck on 24/7 and they have me on candid camera or some show like that. Is this a joke? Anybody else feel me?

      I bought an Android Phone from Personal, an Argentinian Operator, making big noise to offer the Milestone and Quench models, last November 2010. So they sold me a Quench, and now I don’t even have a wrench!
      The phone is so slow that it stinks, to open my agenda with my contacts, it delays over 30 seconds.
      The phones is slow, so slow I miss most of the calls because screen-slider fails to accept the touch, and as it is so slow.. next time you do it, the “terminate Call” bar is there (but you didnt see it because the slow hardware/software combination) so you break and reject any incoming call.
      I called&took the phone several times to Motorola Technical Service, they say “leave us he phone, we will happily erase all of your data and flash a new firmware (still android v: 1.5) and in 3 days you get the same phone back! (still failing)
      After many attempts, the Operator says: it’s motorola fault!, Motorola says “the phone works in this way” and you have a piece of crapp! paid a lot of $
      The 0800 (Motorola Advice) tells you the Upgrade to 2.1 will be the solution, but you have to wait. Meanwhile in the official upgrade-site-info there is a line complainig: MB501: Will remain 1.5
      So I believe Motorola lie to us all, and thinks we are stupid for buying this kind of stuff, but than you for your money!

      Here in Argentina there is no Better Business Bureau, and the Consumer’s Defense is too busy for such a small stuff, so we are literally F***ed! and starting a Legal process against such a big company for so little money is of no use. so we are literally F***ed by Motorola all the way.

      Curiously the same problem arouse on the Milestone which has a slower processor and about the same memory as the MB501-quench, but as they put a lot of advertising money on this model, they upgraded the software ASAP and ‘voila’ it was solved.

      As a Milestone user on the North American Telus Network, I have stopped hoping for the Android 2.2 update; Milestone 2 is out there so they won’t put effort on the Milestone.
      The customer support answer to such request is too live without the new Android features.

      They are also aware of squeaking loud noises during phone conversations that occurs randomly but they won’t provide a fix for this problem.

      All that in less then a year from the date I bought it!

      Motorola should focus on providing good support instead of selling lots of devices, but the latter brings more money in their pocket.

      I think they have to learn a lesson. On my part, I used to like Motorola devices, but this is going to be my last experience with them.

      I have a Quench in Argentina and they promised me to upgrade to 2.1 by march 2011, but they lied! no upgrade plans for Quench in LA.
      he people there (0800 motorola-never-helpdesk) speak with a strange Centro-America Mexican accent and don’t even understand even plain Spanish!
      They keep repeating “Thank you for calling Motorola” what can we help you? and whatever you tell them, they keep repeating: “We will take this advice and let it written down, thank for this”and again “Thank you for calling Motorola” – “What can we do for you///”
      Thy seem to be dummies answering a pre-written script!
      - simply Frustrating!
