If it's time to upgrade your phone chargers or finally make the jump to gallium nitride charging blocks, Ugreen might have a few that you'd be interested in.

The Nexode series of GaN chargers deliver all the benefits of the latest and greatest charging tech; faster speeds, more ports, and smaller sizes. We tested a few of the blocks from the Nexode line to see if they're worth the cash.

What is gallium nitride?

As a refresher, or if you're just learning about these next-gen chargers for the first time, gallium nitride chargers (typically abbreviated GaN) are better than your traditional old silicon chargers across the board. The material handles much higher switching frequencies and offers much denser power structures, and its temperature limits are higher.

All of this means you're getting a charger that's smaller on average, still manages to deliver lightning fast charging speeds to your device, and it thermal throttles less because GaN handles high temperatures better than silicon. They're slightly more expensive, but outside of the price there's no scenario where a silicon charger will beat out an equivalent GaN charger.

That's not to dismiss the price concerns; you really can't find very many sub-$20 GaN chargers yet, but they are steadily getting cheaper and cheaper and will very likely replace most premium silicon chargers over the next few years.

Nexode 45W charger

If you're looking for a compact charger like what you typically get in the box of a new smartphone, the Nexode 45W charger is going to be your first option.

It's roughly about the same size as all those old 5W blocks that came with the phones of yesteryear, but with a few tricks up its sleeve.

The biggest is obviously the charging speed. Despite its small size you're getting 45W worth of power out of this particular wall block, which is enough to cap out tons of fast charging speeds for many phones and tablets.

It also houses two USB-C ports with fast charging speeds coming out of either side, making it ideal for any phone or tablet. But in a pinch it'll handle a small laptop, too.

Plugging two devices in with lower its charging speeds down to a split 25/20W, but that will still sufficiently handle a phone and tablet together. Your laptop will need sole priority here, though.

All of Ugreen's chargers have thermal guard technology, keeping the block from getting too hot and potentially sparking and causing a fire, even when delivering those high speeds. In my experience I never felt the charger get any warmer than a standard wall block, and it was never too hot to touch. That extra safeguard is always welcome, however.

At $39 you'll spend a little more here than a silicon equivalent, but if you need something to charge two devices simultaneously without having to carry around two chargers, it's a slick, compact solution that can still deliver the performance you need from a more premium charger.

Nexode 140W charger

Looking for something to really get your batteries topped off? The other charger we got to test was the 140W flavor of the Nexode series, which offers significantly faster speeds and more versatility from its connectivity options.

This option gets two USB-C ports like the smaller 45W charger, but picks up a standard USB-A port for some of your older cables and devices that either can't or don't need to connect via USB-C.

Those USB-C ports are really what you're going to want to use, though. A single laptop plugged in can pull up to 140W for extremely quick charging, but if you're in a situation where you need to share, the charger can split that between two laptops to rapidly boost up both simultaneously.

Fast laptop charging is all on top of being able to max out even the latest and greatest fast charging on your smartphone or tablet. You're trading some portability for extremely high speeds, and at $149 it's not too far off from what standard laptop chargers cost from many OEMs these days, anyway.

If none of these quite fit the bill, Ugreen does offer chargers in a few other speeds as well. These range from slightly beefier 65W portable chargers to fully dedicated power strip and power station chargers, with prices varying accordingly.

Quality is great here, with impressive thermal management, power delivery, and versatility with ports across the Nexode line. Next time you're checking out chargers, keep an eye on these over your usual Anker choices.
