Edifier W240TN review: sleek, compact, and well-rounded 4

Edifier keeps making waves in the audio space, and today we're spinning up the W240TN truly wireless and noise-canceling earbuds. We've actually checked out some similar wireless Edifier earbuds, but these are a little more compact and subtle, but otherwise still offer a ton of useful features.

Worth the cash? Let's find out.

Quiet design

The AirPods-esque design has really taken over earbuds lately, but the W240TN tries something a little different. Instead of any kind of stem, these are simple earbuds with nothing else. This design trades off microphone placement for a very slim profile that blends in much easier than other headphones.

Edifier has opted for physical buttons on these earbuds, so no capacitive touch sensors to navigate playback and control your music. That's pretty uncommon these days, but once you're used to it they work very well and avoid accidental touches.

The case is also very discrete and straightforward, but with a few small flourishing accents. There's an LED light on the front to indicate the earbuds turning on and charging, plus a USB-C port and syncing button on the back. The earbuds have a magnet built into them that helps keep them in place, and even tossing the case around upside down won't let them fall out. These small touches all feel like something that you usually only get well above the $80 price range.

Well-rounded sound

In our experience, Edifier speakers and headphones tend to swing hard on thumping bass and powerful low end. There's only so much you can do in smaller earbuds, however, even with software tweaks and EQ, but Edifier has rounded out a very good sounding pair of earbuds.

The W240TN uses coaxial dual-dynamic drivers that punch hard for $80 buds and deliver a surprisingly large soundstage. Audio feels tight and precise, and that wider soundstage (plus Edifier's advanced game mode) make them solid choices for whatever media you throw at it, including gaming on the go.

They do seem to lack some mid-bass, but they're surprisingly low end heavy for small headphones. The midrange delivers exactly like it needs to with good clarity, and the treble fleshes out the details for music and movies. It's maybe not Edifier's most exciting pair of headphones, but it checks the boxes for every kind of media you might need them for.

Extra features

Despite that sub-$100 price tag, Edifier hasn't skimped out on features here. These earbuds maybe surprisingly have active noise cancelation, which isn't always common or even effective at this budget. It's not the greatest ANC on the market and I probably wouldn't buy the headphones specifically for that, but you'd be hard-pressed to find many other options that match this.

The headphones also include cutting edge Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, fast recharging that delivers a couple hours of playback from just 10 minutes in the case, and 7 hours of playback out of the case. Phone calls are hit or miss despite some noise-canceling background mics, mostly because of the design that ditches the microphone stem.

Edifier's Connect app gives you some finer control over the headphones, including a couple preset EQs and the ability to customize your own. We've mentioned it in another review, but that's a pretty complex EQ setup, unfortunately, and really isn't beginner-friendly. It is easy to adjust how the shortcuts work, though, so you can tweak what double and triple tapping your headphones do.

The game mode in the app also turns on a very low-latency mode that will let you wirelessly play on your phone without the annoying lag between on-screen action and what you're hearing. Lastly, they're IP55 rated against sweat and moisture, and Edifier sells them in both black and white.

Worth it?

While not their most expensive, the W240TN might actually be one of Edifier's most well-rounded devices. They sound extremely well-balanced even with Edifier's penchant for heavier low end, offer a ton of features and Bluetooth 5.3, and have very good battery life.

They're not perfect, and you are trading away things like real water resistance and better microphone quality, but they're as good as any for someone that's looking for a strong pair of headphones for music, movies, games, podcasts, and everything in between, it's tough to find more value for $79.
