The Oppo Reno 12 Pro, which was launched alongside the standard Reno 12 in China last month, is now confirmed for a global release later this month. This is according to an official statement at a London-based conference today, plus a Geekbench listing. The caveat? Other details suggest that the global variant comes with a significantly different chipset compared to its Chinese counterpart.
Geekbench Listing Spots the Nerf
According to a Geekbench listing spotted via MySmartPrice, the global version of the Oppo Reno 12 Pro will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor. This was not explicitly shown, but instead was indirectly identified by the configuration of four 2.50GHz performance cores and four 2.0GHz efficiency cores.
This is a massive downgrade from the MediaTek Dimensity 9200+ chipset found in the Chinese model. Not only is it inferior across the board, but the Dimensity 7300 effectively puts the global version of the Reno 12 Pro down a whole tier within the mid-range segment!
The new listing also reveals a variant with 12GB of RAM (the configuration tested). In China, the Reno 12 Pro is available with up to 16GB RAM and 512GB of storage. Hopefully, this is not the only variant available for the global version.
Other Specs Seem Fine
Despite the downgraded processor, the Reno 12 Pro is still expected to feature the exact triple camera setup on the rear, which includes a 50MP main camera with a Sony IMX890 sensor, a 50MP 2x telephoto camera, and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. Same with its 50MP front-facing camera.
The screen is also completely untouched, with the Reno 12 Pro (and base Reno 12) featuring a 6.7-inch OLED display with FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.
Its battery is expected to pack a similar-ish 4,880mAh battery (5000mAh), with support for 80W fast charging. The original ColorOS 14 update seems largely unchanged as well.
Will Global Version Prices Shift Accordingly?
Aside from the Reno 12 series rollout this month, the aforementioned London conference also confirmed the global launch of Oppo’s Find X flagship models later this year. This will be spearheaded, of course, by none other than the Oppo Find X5.
Regarding pricing, the Oppo Reno 12 Pro is expected to fall into the mid-range category globally. The vanilla Oppo Reno 12 price in China is roughly equivalent to $390 for the 12GB + 256GB option, while the Reno 12 Pro is priced somewhere near $490 (same RAM/storage variant). Even if all other specs were unchanged, we hope that the global versions will be given a nice price cut reflecting its nerfed SoC.
Don’t Forget AI Too!
In addition to the global launch reveal, Oppo has just recently pledged its mission to bring generative AI features to all of its recent smartphone lineups by the end of 2024. The Reno 12 series is expected to be one of the very first products to receive the update.
To that end, the company has already teamed up with giants like Microsoft, Google, and MediaTek to integrate advanced AI capabilities that would emerge as features in image processing, smart charging, and natural language processing, among other latest generative data conveniences.
