Considering all the messaging apps you can use on Wear OS, WhatsApp's removal from the platform due to poor engagement has always been a headscratcher. I mean, who wouldn't want to be able to surreptitiously check their WhatsApp messages in a meeting whilst ostensibly looking at the time? Thankfully, the days of wondering why are over (at least for some) with the news that WhatsApp has finally released a native app for Wear OS for the likes of the Pixel Watch, and the Galaxy Watch 5.
As is often the case, you'll need to be signed up for the WhatsApp beta in order to install the app on your Wear OS smartwatch. You'll need to update to WhatsApp beta v2.23.10.10 on your smartphone after which you can install the Wear OS app on your eligible smartwatch via the Play Store listing. You can sign up for the WhatsApp beta on the Play Store listing below, after which the latest beta update will be available to install on your handset which gives the option of installing the Wear OS app on your smartwatch.
The native WhatsApp app makes it possible to access existing conversations on your smartwatch instead of only being able to respond to new messages. Group Chats are also accessible, and you can send a message via the on-display keyboard or voice input. Images in the conversation will also be previewed so you get an idea of what it is instead of picking up your phone to find out what the image is about.
New tiles in the app give the ability to access your favorite contacts as well as send voice messages to existing conversations.
It should be noted that the Wear OS app doesn't let you search through your existing conversations, nor will it allow you to start a new chat.
