Google Maps Offline: What You Get
Google Maps lets you download maps for offline use, so you can search for addresses, gas stations, or stores even when your internet connection drops. Once a map is downloaded to your device, it remains valid for one year. You’ll still have access to all the essential features you expect from the online version, as long as you stay within the area you saved. That means missing Wi-Fi at your Airbnb or losing cell service on a rural road doesn't have to leave you lost.
How to Keep Tabs on Expiration
The app shows the expiration date for each of your saved areas, so you always know how current your information is. Notably, when an offline map hits its final 15 days before expiring, Google Maps will automatically update it if your device is connected to Wi-Fi. This way, your maps stay up to date with barely any effort, and you avoid getting stuck with outdated info when you need it most.
Getting Started: Downloading and Managing Offline Maps
Downloading an offline map is simple. Just tap your profile picture at the top right, next to the search bar, then select Offline maps under the Location sharing options. You can choose to download a map of your home area or select a custom region instead. Smaller areas typically take up less than 100 MB (about 3.5 ounces of data) and only take a few minutes to download, even with slower connections.
Once you’ve downloaded a map, it’s accessible at any time—even when your phone is in airplane mode. You can rename, update, or delete your map anytime using the three-dot icon. In the settings, you also have the option to allow downloads over mobile data or to enable automatic offline map updates when Wi-Fi is available. Whether you’re planning every detail or just want to be ready for anything, these features have you covered.
Bonus Features: Smart Suggestions and Customization
Google Maps even helps by suggesting maps to download based on travel details it detects in Gmail or Google Travel. If you have a trip coming up, Maps may prompt you to save that region in advance. You can always adjust the download area yourself, or turn on automatic downloads for suggested regions and let the app take care of everything while you focus on your journey.
