The sci-fi thriller trailer everyone’s buzzing about is finally here: Hot Spot just dropped its first look and it’s already got genre fans talking.

Noomi Rapace is back in science fiction

Noomi Rapace has returned to science fiction with The End of It, making her comeback a decade after her roles in Alien: Covenant, Seven Sisters, and Bright—all of which were released in 2017. The End of It was presented in competition for the Caméra d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. In this film, death wasn’t just fate but a choice you had to justify to loved ones. Early reviews, however, were reportedly lukewarm, and as of now, there are no scheduled releases for France or the United States.

Now, Rapace is headlining a brand new and “out there” sci-fi feature: Hot Spot.

A wildly inventive vision from Agnieszka Smoczyńska

Hot Spot is directed and co-written by Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyńska, known for distinct films like The Lure (2015), Fugue (2018), and The Silent Twins (2022). Smoczyńska once again works with actor Andrzej Konopka, who starred in The Lure. This time, she’s blending thriller and sci-fi elements. The first trailer has just been released, and it’s generating genuine buzz for its bold visuals and genre-mixing style.

A future ruled by sentient AI—and danger

The story takes place in a futuristic civilization governed by a sentient AI. While investigating a mysterious murder, private detective Jan 623 (Andrzej Konopka) encounters a rebellious group threatening the digital ruler. Things escalate when he meets a mysterious woman called the Witch (Noomi Rapace), challenging everything he thought he knew.

Striking, surreal visuals tease a multidimensional narrative

The trailer showcases original and sometimes surreal imagery: a dust-choked refugee camp, characters flickering as if suffering digital glitches, dreamlike shots of a blue forest, a tiger ambling through someone’s home, and even a head that explodes in a nod to Scanners. There are hints that the film might play with multiple dimensions or intersecting timelines, reminiscent of The Beast by Bertrand Bonello (2024). The edit and visual flair call to mind the analog-digital contrasts seen in Matrix-style sequences.

Hot Spot is set to release in the United States on August 21, 2026, following its premiere at the Fantasia Festival. In France, The Jokers Films will distribute it later in the year, landing in theaters December 30. If you’re craving science fiction that dares to be strange and ambitious, keep your eyes on this one—it’s on track to spark plenty of conversation.
