The Boroughs: Netflix's Latest Sci-Fi Standout
The Boroughs is a new mini-series created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, with production by the well-known Duffer brothers, best known for Stranger Things. This American series consists of eight episodes, each running approximately 45 minutes to an hour, and lands squarely in the sci-fi genre that the Duffer brothers are celebrated for.
The series became available on Netflix on May 21, 2026. Within its first week, The Boroughs shot to the top of Netflix charts in multiple countries, quickly gaining buzz among viewers around the world.
Future Seasons? There’s Potential
As of now, there hasn't been an official announcement regarding a second season. However, the ending of the first season is left open, keeping the possibility alive. In an April 2026 interview with Entertainment Weekly, creators Addiss and Matthews said they had originally imagined The Boroughs as a three-season story, with ideas for possible spin-offs. For now, fans will have to wait for official confirmation.
Meet Sam Cooper and His Unlikely Allies
The story follows Sam Cooper (played by Alfred Molina), who, after the death of his wife, reluctantly moves into a retirement home in New Mexico. There, he witnesses very strange happenings that prompt him to team up with other residents. Together, they form an unexpected group of heroes determined to investigate what’s really going on.
The Boroughs tackles heavy themes—aging, death, melancholy, and grief. But despite its somber undertones, the sci-fi angle brings humor and warmth, and these serious subjects are treated with tenderness and a good dose of wit.
Critics and Audiences Take Notice
Between May 18 and May 24, The Boroughs held the number two spot worldwide, just behind Nemesis, and reached the number one position in both the United States and United Kingdom, according to Netflix. Audiences have praised the performances of Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2), Geena Davis (Beetlejuice), and Alfre Woodard (Grand Canyon). The show’s original story, emotional depth, and engaging themes have helped it earn a standout 96% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a solid 79% from audiences.
Perhaps the highest praise so far has come from Stephen King himself. The legendary author of The Shining, It, and The Green Mile took to his social media profiles to describe The Boroughs as a “pure delight,” adding his voice to the chorus of approval. King is known for expressing his strong opinions about TV and film adaptations — so his endorsement carries particular weight.
If you’re searching for a series that’s touching, entertaining, and a little bit weird, The Boroughs fits the bill. Take it from Stephen King: this might just be your next favorite binge-watch.
