Prime Video’s Recipe Still Packs a Punch
On May 13, Amazon Prime Video released its newest series, Off Campus, embracing the formula that’s found success in titles like A contre-sens, Maxton Hall, The Summer I Turned Pretty, and We Were Liars (known in France as Nous les menteurs). Off Campus draws from a hit book series and aims squarely at a young audience eager for campus romance and drama.
Originality may not be the show’s strong suit—its premise has been used time and again. Still, that hasn’t stopped Off Campus from blowing past expectations to become a standout hit for Amazon.
Outperforming Prime’s Heavy Hitters
According to figures reported by Deadline, Off Campus outpaced even Prime powerhouses like Reacher and The Boys, securing the third-biggest series launch ever on Amazon Prime Video. The series tallied more than 36 million views in only twelve days. That’s serious attention for a collegiate love story.
Only two series have managed bigger debuts on the platform: the first seasons of Fallout and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. This marks a significant achievement, reportedly fueled by strong viewership among young women. In the 18-34 age group, Off Campus has reportedly delivered the most successful launch ever for Amazon in that demographic.
What’s the Story?
Off Campus adapts the hit novel series by Elle Kennedy, brought to Prime Video by creator Louisa Levy. Season one follows the lives, relationships, and friendships of students centering on Briar University’s hockey team. The main storyline zeros in on Hannah Wells, a talented musician, and Garrett Graham, the star hockey player. What begins as a pretend relationship between Hannah and Garrett turns real over time—a dynamic that’s clearly drawn in millions of viewers.
Where Does Off Campus Go Next?
Impressed by the show’s early success, Amazon has already announced a second season. No official details are available yet, but since each of Kennedy’s novels focuses on a new couple, viewers can expect plenty of twists and fresh faces in the seasons ahead—similar to series like Bridgerton and Heated Rivalry.
