A Fresh Look at an Iconic Team
As Velma might put it, the mystery was starting to come together. Scooby-Doo: Origins is a new live-action series based on the classic Hanna-Barbera characters. This time, it explores how the legendary crew—and their ever-memorable dog—came together for their very first case.
More than fifty years after its debut, Scooby-Doo is still a fixture in pop culture, with multiple animated series and three theatrical films behind it. Instead of revisiting familiar territory, the upcoming show promises to dig into the terrifying case that first united the Mystery Inc. team.
The Mystery Begins: A Summer Like No Other
So how did a lovable, famously fearful Great Dane and his future friends form the group we know? According to official details, the story is set during their final summer at camp. Longtime friends Shaggy and Daphne find themselves caught in a haunting mystery centered on a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy—potentially Scooby-Doo—who may have witnessed a supernatural murder. They're joined by the level-headed, scientific Velma and a mysterious new arrival, Freddy. Together, the four work to solve a case that draws them into a nightmare, exposing secrets as they forge their iconic friendship.
A Creative Team Built for Mystery
This reimagining comes from showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg with their company Midnight Radio. Executive producers also include Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman from Berlanti Productions, alongside André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson for Midnight Radio. Toby Haynes is also set as an executive producer and will direct the premiere episode.
“One of my first and favorite jobs in Hollywood was sitting with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera while they signed animation cels,” said Berlanti. “Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation.”

The age-old question “Scooby-Doo, where are you?” had an answer as production started in Atlanta, Georgia. As of now, Netflix has not announced an official release date for Scooby-Doo: Origins. Fans will have to keep an eye out for further updates as they're revealed.
