When you consider its previous effort was the quite mad (in a good way) Cards, the Universe and Everything, that’s some going.

This new effort is called Wild Cards, and it offers you the chance to battle almost anything against each other. And we mean anything.

Like what?

The game works by asking you to set up a deck of 12 cards, and there really is no limit as to what you can add as part of your “team.”

Jane Austen, the sun, a skilled ninja, the list goes on. But this cast list isn’t just for show, with every card having their own special abilities you can combine to devastating effect in matches.

You have to pick one of your cards as a hero, and then it’s time to fight. And here’s where Wild Cards gets really interesting.

No waiting

Because Wild Cards aren’t focused on strangling you with endless tutorials or menus. Instead matches are fast paced, and winning them relies on thinking quickly – smart split second decisions are often rewarded, and ponderous moves usually aren’t.

You have to make sure you use your deck’s special abilities at the right time, and matches move quickly. So if you lose you’re never too far off jumping right back into the fray again.

Each card has interesting facts and relevant synergies too, so the process of collecting them is engaging in itself.

There’s also the chance to trade with other players in-game, reducing the need to use in-app purchases – a very welcome design choice.

Get involved

“After the success of CUE, we wanted to push things a little further – with faster, punchier battles, more accessible deck-building, and gorgeous card graphics,” said Paul Mayze, Managing Director at Avid Games.

We think they’ve done just that, and you can download the game for free now on the App Store and Google Play.
