If, like us, you’re always watching for the next big project from Sam Esmail, there’s compelling news out of the world of comics, Netflix, and alternate realities. Mr. Robot set a high bar for television thrillers, and Esmail’s latest involvement in science fiction could be another standout moment in his career.
Sam Esmail: Creative Momentum in Television and Film
Esmail’s work, especially the four seasons of Mr. Robot, has been celebrated as a highlight of modern TV. His 2023 Netflix film Leave the World Behind may have divided audiences, but it pulled together critics at Écran Large. Even its ambiguous ending was defended by passionate supporters, despite frustrating many viewers.
Esmail’s ongoing projects continue to attract a loyal following. Not long ago, it was reported that Esmail was working on a feature called Tesseract with Glen Powell. Now, news has emerged about another adaptation. This time, Esmail will serve as producer—via his Esmail Corp banner—on a project based on a comic book.
Astronaut Down: From Graphic Novel to Netflix
According to a Deadline report, Esmail Corp has partnered with AfterShock Media—which adapts comics from AfterShock Comics like Red Atlantis and Brothers Dracul—to develop a feature film based on the graphic novel Astronaut Down. Esmail will solely produce, while F. Scott Frazier will write the screenplay for Netflix. Frazier is known for his work on action films such as xXx: Return of Xander Cage and No Way Out.
“Douglas Spitzer dreams of joining the ‘astronauts’ chosen for the vital Politzer mission. Like figures such as Buzz Aldrin and Sally Ride, Douglas is brave, adaptable, and selfless—a top candidate in the program. But if he’s selected, Douglas won’t leave Earth’s atmosphere. Instead, he’ll launch into alternative realities in a desperate mission to save the world from an apocalyptic threat of extinction. It’s a journey filled with obstacles, testing Douglas’s training and humanity, and a hidden secret could undermine his entire mission.”
Can This Collaboration Deliver?
The pairing of Sam Esmail and F. Scott Frazier might seem unusual—Esmail’s cerebral style contrasts with Frazier’s action-focused film background. Still, Astronaut Down appears to offer ground for both: the story promises philosophical themes about our world alongside the potential for action and spectacle that Netflix audiences often enjoy.
What’s Next for Esmail Fans?
As of now, there has been no official release timeline for Astronaut Down. Esmail’s admirers, however, have another milestone to mark: his directorial project Panic Carefully, starring Julia Roberts, scheduled to release on February 24, 2027.
With Mr. Robot (a rare show praised for its final season), Homecoming, and Leave the World Behind all under his belt, anticipation for Sam Esmail’s next creative chapter feels well-earned.
