Tired of having plot twists ruined the moment you open your group chat? You’re not alone. WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature that aims to protect your favorite series, books, and games from spoilers—offering long-awaited relief to group conversations everywhere.
The Spoiler Problem in Group Chats
Most of us know the feeling: you’re just checking messages, when suddenly someone starts discussing the latest movie, the ending of that popular show, or some big twist in a new video game. You haven’t caught up yet, but now it’s too late—details get dropped and the element of surprise is gone. While some forums and messaging apps already let users wrap potential spoilers, WhatsApp users have been left without such tools—until now.
Meta Steps In With Spoiler Formatting
This issue has finally started to change. According to reporting from Wabetainfo and the Belgian outlet Geeko, WhatsApp has tested and begun deploying a new text formatting option designed to hide spoilers within conversations. The tool lets users mask part or all of a message’s content using special formatting, so only those who choose to reveal the hidden message will see what’s inside. This gives users more control over what they see—and when.
How to Hide Spoiler Content on WhatsApp
The process is simple: to hide your spoiler, enclose the text with two vertical bars at the beginning and end. For example, typing ||your spoiler here|| will mask that content. Other users in the chat can then tap the covered text whenever they’re ready to see it, helping keep surprises intact for everyone.
This feature was in testing in WhatsApp’s beta version, and Meta had planned to gradually roll it out as development was finalized. The company may also extend this spoiler-hiding capability to other message types, including images, in the future.
