Let’s be honest: how many of those thousands of photos on your phone do you actually look at? Google Photos has given users a new, fun excuse to rediscover their galleries—by transforming ordinary selfies into memes designed for sharing. Could this be your ticket to viral fame on social media? Here’s how the latest feature works.

Meet Me Meme: Google Photos’ AI Meme Maker

Google Photos has continuously introduced new features to help users revisit and enjoy their memories, such as automated albums and flashbacks. With advances in AI, Google launched Me Meme, an experimental tool that generates humorous images from your own photos. The feature even has its own support page on the Google Photos website.

With Me Meme, users can automatically convert a well-lit, clear, front-facing selfie into a personalized meme. The process is straightforward: you go to the Create tab in Google Photos, pick a predefined template or import your own reference image, and then select your selfie. The AI processes the shot, generating an image meant for sharing.

Once your meme is ready, you have the option to save it to your library, create a different variation with a new AI run, or share it directly. Google also includes a feedback tool, letting users compare their original photo with the generated meme.

Sharing and Engaging With Your Memes

The intent behind Me Meme is all about sharing—with friends and on social networks. In just a few taps, you might create an image that racks up hundreds of thousands of likes, something Google hopes will keep people coming back to the app. By encouraging creativity with old photos, Google aims to compete with third-party meme apps, banking on its ecosystem’s integration.

Availability: Currently United States Only

As of now, Me Meme has been available as an experimental feature in the United States, accessible on both Android and iOS. Google has not indicated plans or timing for a wider rollout to other countries. The company often tests new features in limited regions before expanding their availability.

Although similar meme features exist in other apps, Google Photos’ advantage lies in a more streamlined and integrated experience. Me Meme’s memorable name and straightforward use should appeal to those who enjoy creating and sharing viral images—even if it’s not for everyone.
