Last December, Netflix delivered a holiday-season gift to its subscribers with Carry-On, an action thriller that quickly became a global hit. In this Die Hard-style adventure, Taron Egerton stars as a young airport security officer who finds himself blackmailed by a mysterious passenger on Christmas Eve. The stranger threatens to force him into smuggling a dangerous package onto a plane, turning the festive night into a deadly game of survival.
Produced by none other than Steven Spielberg, the film caused a sensation on the streaming platform. With 172 million views, it secured a spot among the top ten most-watched Netflix films of all time. Naturally, such a success sparked speculation about a possible sequel.
Taron Egerton cools expectations for Carry-On 2
Back in January, director Jaume Collet-Serra hinted that a second instalment could happen “if the right idea came along.” At the time, Taron Egerton also seemed open to returning as Officer Ethan Kopek. However, the British actor has since tempered expectations.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he praised the film and his collaboration with Collet-Serra but explained the challenges of creating a believable follow-up:
“Jaume and I really want to do more projects together. I love working with him. But as for Carry-On 2, it’s going to be tricky. It’s a Christmas story that celebrates those who work during the holidays. You need a new, credible plot to throw the hero into, and it’s hard to avoid something that feels forced. I haven’t heard anything yet… but stranger things have happened.”
Netflix keeps the talent in-house
While no sequel has been officially announced, Netflix has secured Jaume Collet-Serra for a multi-year deal to produce new projects. His first, An Innocent Girl, is a psychological thriller about an ambitious young woman drawn into the dangerous world of a powerful Washington couple, where sex, power, and murder intertwine.
Taron Egerton, meanwhile, has rapidly become one of Netflix’s emerging action stars. In addition to Carry-On, he is set to headline Apex next year, a survival thriller directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest) and co-starring Charlize Theron.
For now, the duo are busy with other projects, but the door for Carry-On 2 remains ajar. With Netflix, nothing is ever truly off the table.
