With each new year comes Samsung Unpacked, and today, January 17th, is the chosen day for Android lovers in 2024. The Samsung Galaxy S24 series is now official and, most notably, brings updates to the display, chipset, battery, and software, along with a bunch of new AI-powered features.
The series is now open for pre-orders, so if you're interested, it's time to strike. Orders will start shipping on January 31st in exactly two weeks.
The Official Specifications For Samsung's New Galaxy S24 Devices
The Samsung S24 series is official, and the new devices come with solid specifications across the board. Samsung tapped largely into the mantra of “if it ain't broke, don't fix it”, with little difference from the previous two generations design-wise. There are some minor upgrades to the internal hardware, though many of the specs are largely similar to the S23 devices.
All three devices come with some similarities: Android 14 skinned with One UI 6.1, Dynamic AMOLED LTPO displays capable of refreshing anywhere from 1Hz to 120Hz and reaching an astounding peak brightness of 2,600 nits, 12MP selfie cameras unchanged from the S23 phones, and IP68 water resistance.
Samsung Galaxy S24
The smallest device in Samsung's flagship lineup gets a tad bigger this year, with a 6.2-inch FHD+ display. The rear camera setup has a 12MP ultra-wide, a 50MP wide, and a 10MP 3x telephoto lens.
Inside the phone, you'll be lucky enough to get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 if you're in North America, but Europe and other regions will be getting Samsung's own Exynos 2400. You'll get 8GB of RAM whether you're going for the 128, 256, or 512GB variants.
All of this is powered by a 4,000 mAh battery that you can charge wirelessly at 15W or wired at 25W. At launch, the device will be available in four colors: Onyx Black, Marble Grey, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow.
Samsung Galaxy S24+
This generation, the S24+ blurs the lines between itself and the Ultra device. Similar to its smaller sibling, the Samsung Galaxy S24+ bumps its screen size up to 6.7 inches, bringing it much closer to the S24 Ultra. This display is QHD+, just like the S24 Ultra, and moves to a 19:3:9 aspect ratio.
It rocks the same camera setup as the S24, with 12MP ultra-wide, 50MP wide, and 10MP 3x telephoto cameras in tow. Similarly, you'll also have the option of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in North America and the Exynos 2400 in Europe. You'll get 12GB of RAM paired with either 256 or 512GB of storage.
You get a larger 4,900 mAh battery; again, a lot closer to the S24 Ultra than the previous generation. You can charge wirelessly at 15W and wired at 45W, the max that Samsung has offered on its flagships for some time. At launch, the device will be available in four colors: Onyx Black, Marble Grey, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow.
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
As expected, the big boy in Samsung's lineup, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, comes with heavy-hitting specs. The screen stays at 6.8-inch QHD+, but this time around, it comes with Corning's new Gorilla Glass Armor protecting it. It is said to be stronger and is said to reduce reflections by up to 75%. You'll also get Samsung's first titanium frame protecting this phone and the S-Pen inside.
The camera setup comes with a 12MP ultra-wide and 10MP 3x telephoto lens but also packs a 200MP wide camera and 50MP 5x telephoto, dropping the 10x from the last generation but still capable of 100x Space Zoom. A perk of the S24 Ultra is that you'll get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 no matter where you are, paired with 12GB of RAM and 256, 512, and 1TB storage options.
The battery here is rated at 5,000 mAh with 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. You'll get Titanium Grey, Titanium Black, Titanium Violet, and Titanium Yellow as exclusive colorways for the Ultra. For the gamers out there, you'll get better cooling, too, as Samsung says they've implemented a vapor chamber that's 1.9 larger than in the S23 Ultra.

What New Features Has Samsung Brought To The Table?
Samsung went heavy on the Galaxy AI theme this year, so the new devices have a slew of AI enhancement features to make your experience a lot better than ever.
Here are some of the notable features you'll be able to take advantage of with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series:
- Live Translate: Translates phone calls in voice and text, in real-time. 13 languages will be supported at launch.
- Circle to Search: A collaboration with Google, long-pressing the Home button will allow you to circle, highlight, tap, or even scribble on anything you want to search for more info on.
- Interpreter: Splits your screen to allow real-time text transcription when talking with someone across from you. It will work without an internet connection.
- Note Assist: It uses AI to summarize your notes and can even make templates and covers for notes.
- Transcript Assist: Uses AI to transcribe, summarize, and even translate voice recordings.
- Generative Edit: This can be used to add details to photos taken on the device, such as when trying to straighten a crooked shot or shifting the subject to a different position in the photo.
How Do These Smartphones Compare To The Previous Generation?
The S24 series is a solid lineup of smartphones, but how different are they from the S23 devices that paved the way before them? The answer? Besides Galaxy AI (which is a huge update), the hardware isn't too significantly different.
They all come with the usual upgrades, such as a newer chipset, a newer operating system, and different color options. For the most part, though, the cameras and storage options are the same. You do get higher peak brightness and slightly larger LTPO displays (besides the S24 Ultra, which stays the same size). The batteries for the smaller models get a little bump as well.
They're excellent devices, though. When Samsung perfects a formula, most of the changes worth upgrading are in the software, which stays the same this year. Do you like what you see with the S24 lineup, and will you be pre-ordering? Let us know in the comments.
