It's not often that a smartphone brand changes the name of its operating system but that's the case with Xiaomi which is moving away from its well-known MIUI branding to the new HyperOS moniker. Usually, when a brand does this, it's in conjunction with a phone launch and the new OS name starts from that point forward. But, unusually, and surprisingly so, Xiaomi plans to roll out HyperOS to older devices as well. The Xiaomi 14 range launched running on HyperOS but some of its more recent smartphones, tablets and even Smart TVs will get the update and we've got the details for you after the break.

What is HyperOS?

HyperOS is taking over the mantle from Xiaomi's MIUI operating system, with the purpose of offering a more coherent user-experience across devices ranging from smartphones, tablets, Smart TVs and more. At the core of the OS is Xiaomi's self-developed Vela system which aims to facilitate seamless connectivity across devices. Supporting more than 200 different processor platforms, over 20 file formats, HyperOS allows for flexible configurations with RAM requirements ranging from just 64KB to as much as 24GB.

The seamless connectivity function will make it easier to connect to a camera source for video conferencing, access car cameras, or IoT devices with your phone, tablet, or laptop. This all ties in with Xiaomi's plan to support its own ecosystem which already has more than 200 different types of devices already.

Which Phones Are Eligible To Get HyperOS?

You may not know this but MIUI was actually Xiaomi's very first product, developed long before the company began making smartphones. My very first experience with MIUI was when I flashed a ROM to the original Galaxy Tab and experienced a range of features and functions that simply weren't available on Samsung's TouchWiz. It was also a better user-experience and for myself at least, I found battery life to be improved.

All things come to an end, though and MIUI's replacement, HyperOS, will roll out to a range of devices, one batch at a time over the coming months. First up for the change over to HyperOS are the following smart devices:

The update will begin rolling in early 2024 in batches, so it's probably worth checking in Settings to see if an OTA is available for your (eligible) device regularly after the new year.
