With Samsung reportedly considering the use of one of its processors in the upcoming Galaxy S22 FE and Galaxy S23, MediaTek has taken the opportunity to quietly announce the launch of its new Dimensity 1300 chipset that builds upon what the Dimensity 1200 achieved. Built on a 6nm process, the Dimensity 1300 octa-core SoC boasts a quartet of Arm Cortex-A78 cores including an Ultra Core that is clocked up to 3GHz and supports super-fast refresh rates, AV1 hardware decoding, and enhanced AI capabilities.

Accompanying the A78 cores are 4 x Arm Cortex-A55 efficiency cores that are clocked up to 2GHz to perform lower priority tasks and increase power efficiency. An Arm Mali G77 MC9 GPU takes care of the graphics side of things and brings support for resolutions of up to 2520 x 1080 and up to a 168Hz refresh rate. There's support for up to 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM at up to 4266Mbps as well as UFS 3.1 storage, and as you might expect in 2022, 5G connectivity is present.

The photography department gains an improved night shot capability and ‘Staggered' 4K HDR video recording that uses real-time 3-exposure fusion to provide a 40% greater dynamic range compared to standard 4K HDR video capture. Other AI-camera features include:

  • AI-Pano Night Shot
  • AI Multi-Person Bokeh Video
  • Multi-Depth Smart Focus Video
  • AINR + HDR Photo

The new chip also features MediaTek's MiraVision Enhanced Video Playback as well as AV1 hardware decoding, bringing cinema-grade visual experiences to the small screen.

  • AI SDR-to-HDR with dynamic, per-frame PQ tuning, AI scene detection, and contrast control
  • Enhanced HDR10+ video playback
  • Hardware-accelerated AV1 decoding ensures excellent power efficiency in 4K video playback from popular streaming services

The integrated 5G modem offers power-saving enhancements, super-fast 5G NR performance and range, plus mixed-duplex 5G carrier aggregation and true dual 5G SIM capability.

  • MediaTek 5G UltraSave power-saving enhancement suite
  • 2CC Carrier Aggregation (200MHz) across FDD+TDD
  • True dual 5G SIM (5G SA + 5G SA)
  • Dual VoNR

While there's no official word on when we'll see MediaTek's new Dimensity 1300 SoC powering a phone, there are rumors that it will be found on the as-yet-unannounced OnePlus Nord 3 5G that will launch later this year.
