Galaxy S21

When I reviewed the regular Galaxy S21 earlier this year, I genuinely liked it. There are some compromises, sure, but it's an all around solid phone, and there's something to like about the entire lineup.

But reviews don't actually mean anything, and it turns out nobody is buying these things. Whoops.

Galaxy S21 sales are down

Some new sales numbers from the first six months of sales have leaked, and they don't paint a pretty picture for Samsung's latest flagship line. Compared to last year's Galaxy S20, which launched during a pandemic, the S21 is down about 20%. That's doubly bad when you consider Samsung considered the S20 a sales disappointment, so they cut the price for the Galaxy S21 line.

When you go back to the Galaxy S10 (which, again, were some pretty good phones!) things get even worse. Sales have dropped nearly 50% from the 2019 flagship Samsung models.

This year's phones have only moved about 13.5 million units, which struggles to compete with what Apple moves in a month. It's not clear exactly what's dragging these phones down, but there's a few factors we can guess.

While the Galaxy S21 does offer some improvements over its predecessor, in many ways its more of a remix of the Galaxy S20 without bringing anything particularly new to the table. It's also competing in a market where flagship phones become less and less important every year, and Samsung's wild ideas have shifted towards the Galaxy Z Fold ad Galaxy Z Flip phones to reignite some interest in the flagship sector. But that's certainly going to eat into the customer base that was buying the Galaxy S line.

Samsung has to hope that holds up and their new phones next week spice things back up.

  1. How much of the malaise is due to there being no memory expansion slot? That’s been important to me since I had a Palm Treo 650 in late-2004. Back then a 1GB SD card cost a cool $100 at CompUSA (rest in peace and thank you, CompUSA).

  2. The only Android phones in the Top 10 are mid tier phones. The days of any <$399Android phones selling in qunantity are done.
