A new desktop app for Google Drive is now available to download that unifies the separate Backup and Sync and Google Drive Filestream functions into a single app for both consumer and business users. The new Google Drive for Desktop app supports both Windows and MacOS operating systems.
The Backup and Sync desktop app is scheduled to cease working from October 1st, with users receiving notifications via the app to prompt them to update to the Google Drive for Desktop app from August 18th.
“Earlier this year, we announced that we were working towards unifying our two existing Google Drive sync clients – Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream – into a single sync client called Drive for desktop. By doing this, we're creating a powerful and unified sync client with the best and most used features from both Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream”
The new Google Drive for Desktop app offers the following new features:
- Upload and sync photos and videos to Google Photos and/or Google Drive
- Sync external storage devices to the cloud, including flash drives and external hard drives
- Mirror Drive files on your desktop, which stores your files on your local device and enables quick access to your content
