Meet Samsung's newest phone, the Galaxy A80. It's strange, weird, and different, and it's bringing some of the funky innovation back to smartphones that we've been missing for a few years.
Sure, it's probably going to be a commercial flop, but we love seeing phones like this again.
This phone is built for the “era of live,” according to Samsung, which goes a step beyond just taking tons of selfies. People share tons of moments throughout their lives, and they need a phone that can keep up with that. The Galaxy A80 helps by offering a full-screen display, an intelligent battery, and a crazy rotation camera mechanism.
When you're shooting selfies, the phone's triple cameras pop up from the back and rotate towards you, so you're not compromising quality by using typically lower resolution front cameras here. There's a 48-megapixel main shooter, 3D depth shots, an ultra wide angle lens, and Steady Shot for capturing perfect videos. You can expect to see this thing used heavily in social media promotions.
Beyond that, the phone does seem to have pretty decent hardware everywhere else, too. There's a 6.7-inch FHD Super AMOLED display, an intelligent 3700mAh battery that can supposedly last all day by learning how and when you use your phone the most, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. I'd argue this thing's more innovative than the Galaxy S10 is.
No microSD card slot, though.
This device is expected to go on sale at the end of May, although Samsung hasn't announced pricing just yet. I imagine it's going to be pretty expensive.
