Huawei has confirmed that the pending launch of their Mate 20 series of smartphones will usher in a new era for processors as the company makes their new Kirin 980 available in a consumer product. The Kirin 980 is notable as it is produced using a 7nm manufacturing process. Huawei says the Mate 20s equipped with the new Kirin 980 will be the first 7nm based devices available to consumers.
The new Kirin 980 will be unveiled at IFA 2018. The timing appears to be at least partially based on a desire to beat to Apple to market with a 7nm chip. According to the information obtained regarding the plans of Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei, at IFA 2018 the company has also targeted October for the launch of the Huawei Mate 20 smartphones. What is unclear is whether Huawei will have anything to shared regarding the Huawei Mate 20 at IFA 2018 or if their announcements will be limited to the new Kirin 980 chips.
Along with the information about the potential launch date for the Mate 20 and the Kirin 980 announcement, Huawei's press release also mentions plans for their processor stack to include their own in-house GPU. That would be a new and unexpected twist if it actually pans out.
