Firefox dropping support for Flash on Android 3

Flash has been on a downward trend for several years now as better, more secure platforms and technology have matured and been deployed. Nevertheless, browsers continue to support it so that users can access legacy sites and content that never bothered to update. The support for Flash on Android is on its way to being a bit smaller though as the latest beta build of Firefox on Android is dropping support for Flash with the next major update which will be version 56.

Mozilla certainly does not mind killing support for Flash on Android as it is part of their plan to phase out support anyway. The company intends to drop support for Flash on all platforms, not just Android, by 2020. The phase-out on Android may have been accelerated a bit though as the next version of Firefox will require Android 4.1 or higher to run. That happens to correspond with the lack of support for Flash by Android starting with version 4.1 and higher.

The next update to Firefox is expected to be released later this week.
