Earlier today, Facebook announced thats its now received approval from the European Union for its $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp Messenger — that’s an eye-watering $16 billion more than Apple paid for Beats Electronics back in May.

The main bone of contention regarding this deal was the fear that it would impair communication in the telecom market, but, according Re/code, the European Commission claims that the Facebook-WhatsApp deal will not thwart competition.

“We have carefully reviewed this proposed acquisition and come to the conclusion that it would not hamper competition in this dynamic and growing market. Consumers will continue to have a wide choice of consumer communications apps,” European Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said.

What do you think of Facebook-WhatsApp acquisition? Do you think it will be beneficial to us, the consumer? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below.

  1. I stopped using whats app the moment I heard facebook bought it. Anything facebook touches is dead to me. I won’t use their messenger app ( I debt use anything I can’t log out of) and never will. This will spend the end for whatsapp in more ways than one.
