Android Security

A new security report published by Cisco has found that 99% of all mobile malware attacks are targeted at Android devices. On top of that, the report says Android suffered 91% of all Java-based web exploits and 71% of all overall web-based exploits. Ouch. This is compared to Cisco finding that Apple's iOS only encountered 17% of web exploits.

Eric Schmidt has publicly claimed that Android is more secure than iOS, but despite all of Android's jumps in security and privacy over the past few years, that's still not quite true. Obviously this doesn't mean all Android devices are infested pits of malware, but just that you're more likely to encounter malware attacks on an Android device.

  1. The headline ‘99%’ of all mobile malware attacks are targeted at Android, which sounds really bad, but if you read the report you then find that one bit of malware (Andr.Smsend) accounts for 98% of all Android malware. According to McAfee “This malware requires that the user intentionally install it upon the device. As always, users should never install applications from unknown or un-trusted android markets.”

So, if you don’t intentionally install the single malware application responsible for 97% of all mobile malware, you are left with a very different spread. Android may still show a slightly higher proportion of malware than some other devices, but that is to be expected from a combination of a higher installed base and the existence of third-party unregulated markets.

  2. Not surprised, Android is too fragmented, manufacturers and carriers don’t want to release updates of which some are security updates and so on. They need to sort shit out.
