Huawei hints at a trendy foldable, 5G phone for next year 4

Huawei knows that two major upcoming trends in smartphones will be folding screens and 5G connectivity, and they want to jump on that bandwagon ASAP. That's why they're planning on releasing a phone that does sometime in 2019 in what will certainly be an expensive, mediocre device that will only be worth it to extremely early adopters.

Huawei has an investment in 5G networks and networking equipment, so it makes a lot of sense for them to try and hype up 5G as much as possible. When you look it at from that perspective the phone really makes perfect sense, as it's not really a phone that's intended to sell millions of units but instead to get people talking about newer technology and what's next for the mobile industry.

Huawei's chairman, Ken Hu, also thinks that 5G will really become an integral part of the smartphone experience in the future. 5G will offer more bandwidth for HD streaming, low latency for cloud-based AI, and IoT support for all of the new smart home devices that we've seen in the past couple of years. And honestly, he doesn't sound wrong; all of those are quickly growing segments and features of the market, and it's stuff that Huawei is heavily invested in all around.

Aside from teasing the existence of the device, Huawei didn't disclose anything else about the phone. No idea on how the foldable screen will be implemented, what kind of hardware to look forward to, or any features that take advantage of the screens or 5G. It'll be something to keep an eye out for in 2019.
