Comcast announced that starting today, customers can use their Android, iOS or PC devices to stream or download recordings from their X1 cloud DVR platform. Mobile devices, both Android and iOS, will have the ability to stream or download recordings while PCs will only be able to stream content. This move fulfills a commitment made by Comcast CEO Brian Roberts to give mobile devices access to live TV and recorded content. The bad news for Comcast customers interested in this new feature is that it appears to only be available to customers in the Bay Area and in the Houston area.
Comcast's move follows the lead of several other platforms like Sling and TiVo as well as other providers like Dish Network, DirecTV and AT&T. By letting customers download content to mobile devices for offline viewing, Comcast will be able to compete a little better against a service like Netflix that requires an active connection. Comcast says their Xfinity TV app, used to access the X1 platform, will give users the full set of features like channel guides, On Demand content, and access to DVR recordings as if they were watching on the TV.
Comcast's X1 DVR service is currently available in Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. Comcast says the X1 DVR should be available to “most” customers by the end of the year.
