Official Android 2.2 build for the Samsung Captivate leaks

by Tyler Cunningham
tagged , , , ,

We brought you an inside scoop earlier regarding Android 2.2 heading for the Samsung Captivate and Vibrant around the middle of this month. Well, for all of you Captivate owners out there, you don’t have to wait that long if you choose not to. It seems that the official Froyo build for the Captivate has leaked, and we have the info on how to install it.

Continue reading below for all the juicy details.

First of all, here is a list of the improvements that Froyo is bringing to the captivate:

  • Colored icons in settings
  • GPS Fix
  • New keyboard
  • Android 2.2 search widget
  • GPS, Auto Rotation on notifications bar
  • Darker menu theme
  • Pop up notifications are darker
  • New “Development USB” icon
  • New app icons (AllShare, Clock, Calendar,
  • Media Hub
  • Nook app
  • JIT Compiler
  • Better Exchange support
  • Android 2.2 Market improvements
  • Improved notifications bar icons
  • Pinch to zoom homescreens
  • Adobe Flash Player 10.1 available in Market and working!

Now, for what you really want to know – how to install 2.2 on your Captivate.  You need this file: .exe Odin Flasher file, these Samsung drivers for your computer, and possibly these USB drivers, in either 32 or 64 bit. Next, follow these instructions:

  1. Download the Android 2.2 Froyo update from designgears (the exe Odin flasher)
  2. Make sure your Captivate’s USB cable is plugged into the computer but not the phone.
  3. Open the .exe file on your Windows PC
  4. Put your phone into download mode by turning it off, holding down the volume keys and plugging the phone into your computer with the MicroUSB cord
  5. The .exe from designgears should now recognize your phone.
  6. Click “Start” to begin!
  7. Once it’s done, let it reboot itself up!

That should do it! If you try this on your Captivate, please leave us a comment below and let us know how it goes.

Just updated my Captivate, everything seems to be working fine. Doesn’t save any of your information though, and gets rid of any root you had. Other than that, so far so good.

  • Robert

Also, the Galaxy S splash screen, the animation is much slower than it was and out of sync with the tune; but doesn’t seem to make booting any longer.

  • James Divis

    flash player works great!
System is very fast…I am impressed!!

  • Ron

Updated last night. Sim card info is available for rebuilding contact list. Be sure to copy to sim before update. Have had Market place crash a couple of times. Pulled various apps from market place without problems. All in All, pleased with result.

  • Zeke

It was a very easy process. The update does improve the gps and wipes out all of your apps and data.

  • Nick1693

Got any info on how to do this on a Mac?

  • Billo

    How long does it take?

  • John Says

Upgrade went very smooth thank you very much!!!!
Really like the Mobil AP no need to tether laptop now. Thanks again.

  • smoky

    Takes about five min.
It couldn’t have been much easier. I am simi retarded and didn’t have any problems. The GPS seems to lock on very quickly after the upgrade. Other than that Flash was the main reason I wanted the upgrade.

  • Czapla

I had to do this twice, the first link I downloaded from a different website did not allow a download. An hour and half waisted. The next link I downloaded from XDA developers and it worked flawlessly. Please make sure everything is backed up. It only takes about 15 minutes for the actual download to your phone. The bulk of the time is downloading the link which I had to do twice….

  • omar

got a quick question? Im thinking about buying this phone in canada, its being released with rogers but there is a local LEGIT store that sells all kind of phone (sn traders) and they are getting some unlocked phones.

If i buy a unlocked phone and use it with fido (rogers baby company) will the 2.2 update still be good for me?

I heard that the updates are only good if your carrier supports android phones.

Plz help Im about to sell my iphone 4 for this.

  • Gav

Does this work on the Samsung galaxy s UK version?

  • Jag

I actually forgot to run the .exe file first (Stuck @ File analysis..), so i had to remove and replace the battery..

it took 3-4 mins and below is the msg

    Added!!
    Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
    File analysis..
    Set PIT file..
    DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
    Get PIT for mapping..
    Firmware update start..
    Sbl.bin
    boot.bin
    cache.rfs
    factoryfs.rfs
    param.lfs
    zImage
    modem.bin
    cache.rfs
    dbdata.rfs
    Removed!!

Make sure you back up contacts!!

Photos and everything else on the SDcard (16gb) are ok. May be only the things on the internal memory (2gb) will be effected.

it is working and its awesome fast!!!!

  • Amit

Mine stucks at file analysis i tried whole process over and over again but no success

  • Xanaki

I updated my Captivate last night to 2.2, all in all it took about 5 mins for the update to complete and let me just tell you this thing is screaming fast. I love being able to use Flash 10.1 and now having access to Media Hub is awesome!! The only thing that I really didnt like was having to reinstall all my apps but other than that I couldnt be happier!!!

  • acecase

+1 on the mac question. I’m not finding a loader for the Mac and, for whatever reason, I can’t find all the drivers for Windows.

  • Jared

First, I updated to this ROM, rooted it, uninstalled bloatware, etc. I found it a little laggy and many apps weren’t available in the market because “2.2 was not official.” So, I unlocked the market, tons of other stuff through ADB, and still had some issues. I migrated over to Cognition 2.2 when it was still Beta2 release and it had a few issues (ok, that’s putting it mildly, but I am currently running Cognition 2.2 Beta5 and I can tell you that I have absolutely no issues with it—at all. Considering how many problems the OFFICIAL Captivate 2.1 has had, that’s saying quite a bit. I recommend anyone that wants froyo and has the Captivate to use it. It is sweet.

  • Naftali Amir

    Odin3 screen indicates
    all threads completed (succerd0/failed0)
and my captivate phone screen indicates
    Downloading
    Do not turn off Target.
However is has been over 5 minutes, how long does it take and what will append if I disconnent the USB cable

  • Brandon

Naftali, I had the same problem. My laptop was actually not recognizing that my phone was there. I switched usb slots and it worked instantly. I restarted the phone twice but had to pull the battery out to do it.

  • Naftali Amir

I have tryed everything including reloading the two drivers (my windows 7 64 bits gave nme a message that one driver was not certified but I loadede it OK. However when I start the process my phone indicate loading but nothing happend

  • Naftali Amir

    Success
I had to ;load the 32 bits USB driver (the 64 bit USB driver did not work).
    Everything is working A OK.
One question, I lost a screen saver ($.99)
that I installed befor the upgrade, is there a way to recovbrer it?

  • JASON6606

is Ferrari Acer available for this 2.2 software upgrade ?

  • D J Richert

Installed this rom about a week ago, now my camera won’t work, it does not have almost any of the ‘froyo’ features, its slower than it was in stock mode and force closes on its own for no reason. Verrry buggy.

  • Julius Ceasar

Awesome. I had patiently waited for AT&T to upgrade officially, but I couldn’t even connect to AT&T server. This upgrade worked flawlessly, and it was my first time doing anything like it.

    Thanks for the great instructions.

The trickiest part was getting all the drivers in place and putting the phone in the download mode – turn off. Press volume buttons, hold the buttons while inserting the USB cable to the phone.

FROYO is all that is cracked up to be. So far so good. I love it!

  • RogerDeath

So I waited like Julius did and had the same issue so I finally flashed my phone over to the Froyo side. Aside from the Galaxy S intro seeming to take longer (at least for the first time) the only other issue I have is that the market is somewhat screwed up for me. Why am I unable to download my apps!?!

  • Julius Ceasar

Yes, when the phone was first booting up, the Galaxy S intro took a long time. I was holding my breath…

Regarding the marketplace app downloading, I have had no issues so far. There was one application that I had with Android 2.1 but is no longer available. I can’t find it anymore! The search yielded “not found”.

Besides that, the downloading of apps seems to be working fine.

  • val

    Odin3 screen indicates
    all threads completed (succerd0/failed0)
and my captivate phone screen indicates
    Downloading
    Do not turn off Target.

no change after ten minutes. All drivers successfully installed and tried different usb ports. still nothing, any suggestions?

  • Pat

same here i am waiting for my phone and it says downloading…

    Do not turn off Target!!!
    Can anyone help me

  • Julius Ceasar

After upgrading to 2.2, I was running IHeartRadio when I noticed that the phone kept soft resetting. Does anybody else have this problem?

  • Alohaor

Just updated, everything works fine. Market app crashes after extended use. GPS works much better and in general all apps seem to run faster.

  • help

I have dial up to start with but i downloaded everythin g that’s required for the download but i can’t figure out how to do it. Please someone contact me to help me. Moofes456@gmail.com. Thank you!!

  • fredy

after update my captivate to 2.2 , i cann’t send sms.

  • Cadman

Updated to Android 2.2 today on my Samsung Captivate. Everything went great until I tried to connect to my BlueAnt 4S Bluetooth. Worked fine with 2.1. Anyone else having this issue?

  • steve

i tried so many time but when i turn off my device and hold the down volume the don,t recognize my captivate when i turn it on every thing fine and the pc can find my phone any suggestion

  • Wesley

    Worked Perfect….10/10

  • steve

im using odin 3 but when im turning my device off and holding the down the volume button igot this massege (the computer cant find the phone software please help)

  • mike

piece of cake. really as easy as it sounds.

  • Alan

The leaked copy has it’s issues.

Honestly I would wait until Nov 11th when they plan to roll out the Update OTA.

Lots of force closes. There is some Jitter in the menu’s and home screens.
As with any beta it will have problems. So use at your own risk.

  • jer

ok, so i had 5 min of trouble with the drivers installing, but once that was solved it only took 3 min to install the system. i’ve been messing with it for about 2 hrs now and it seems great. no probs so far! all the added features with froyo are why i got the captivate and i’m going to get my wife one now and do this as soon as it comes out the box. back up your contacts, everything else will be safe for the upgrade

  • dcab

i followed the instructions and it worked out great! thank you very much! woohoo! im loving 2.2!!

  • p Hoeve

Worked fine once I used a usb port on the back of my computer. The port in the front works for other things but not or odin3 !

    • Felipe Vallejos

Man I could kiss you!!! Switched to another USB port and worked fine!!!!

  • Dmbfan9905

much faster, just wish kies would work with it…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FTV72ULKO4MZ6EOGH2K5YGLC7Q Ox

Perfect I am using the Samsung Captivate and have had no issues with the software….been messing with it for the last 3 hours now.

  • PISSED OFF GUY

DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. I DID EVERYTHING YOU TOLD ME TO DO AND IT SAYS FAIL EVERY TIME.

(edited: reason – no profanity please)

  • Ali

I did update my Samsung Captivate few minutes ago. It worked great, looks pretty and fast. The only problem is that I lost all my applications and I do not know how to get them back!!!
    Any idea?

    Thanks anyway, great job

  • app316

The upgrade was fast and it worked – the problems started when I tried to use the GPS on Google Navigate – GPS wouldn’t work and after I tried to use that with Voice guidance my phone is totally messed up – it loads up then it freezes, the screen won’t turn on, taking the battery out won’t work, all I get is something about the media hub scanning – but I basically can’t use the phone right now because of this.

  • new to droid

Had to use 32 bit driver…..worked perfect……2.2 is great……other having to download apps again and losing everything saved on the phone and not the card its great…..no issues with market….keyboard much improved….phone ALOT faster.

  • loving it!

It was easy like you said (except for my troubles trying to get my phone in download mode lol). Now I love it! Thank you so much! Just one question—it says there is a gps fix but what was wrong with it from the beginning? Sometimes it wouldn’t recognize where I was—is that what people were talking about?

  • dissention

Works Great, and Easy, a little tricky to enter download mode but:

Fixed GPS and my problem of unable to scan networks

overall performance improvement is worth it

  • Daniel

Will this update void my warranty ?

Its the only thing thats keeping me from not doing it.

  • Keith

Silky smooth after update. I can finally show off this phone in front of iphone users.
64 bit driver didn’t work for me ( Windows 7 64). I had to install the 32 bit driver. Another than that, very easy to install.

  • Mike

wondering the same thing as daniel, just bought this phone a month ago and i’m not looking to void the warranty in anyway. Chances are it will, but i do have the extended warranty so if something goes wrong it won’t be a huge tragedy. Ill give AT&T till the end of the month till i consider this.

  • Reemington

I had problems at first with this install. I tried to remove that which I had loaded previously and on 3rd attempt it worked. So far 2.2 is outperforming 2.1 less hang-ups and crashes but not blisteringly fast.

  • Prashant

If you are stuck at the “DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!”. Remove battery, Follow the instructions to the LETTER. For added effect, take off the sim card. Not sure which one of the two helped me more, but it worked finally.

Make sure the exe is ready and waiting when you connect the phone, and dont try to plug unplug the phone to get it detected while the exe is connected.

  • Big D

Great os. Switched from blackberry because rim is too behind in tech. Glad I switched to droid now. Very fast. TX for update.

  • raftinak

Updated to 2.2 about a week ago and everything seems to be working fine. I’ve had a few annoyances, the music player doesn’t work the same but all music is there. I lost some movies but not all and that may have been from an upgrade to windows 7 and syncing about the same time. I ended up with duplicate contacts but that was from saving to an external card before the upgrade; I just had to delete the file from the card. The addition of the mobile AP makes it well worth the upgrade. I no longer have to pay for access or hunt free WiFi on the road. I think if you wait for AT&T to provide an update you won’t get the mobile AP or tethering unless you give up your unlimited data account and pay an extra monthly fee.

  • farglnocker

wiped out the Android keyboard (which I love) but kept the Samsung keyboard (which is only ok)… weird. Ran very slow at first, but seems to have improved after setting up the stock apps. Had to download all my other apps too. Running very, very smooth, lot’s to be happy about. I wonder how this will affect 3.0 (if it’ll ever be available for the Captivate).

  • alex

booted up slow but other than that it is great! im loving it! samsung ftw

  • jack

can it be rooted after this

  • Zo

I have never messed with any android phone before and it was my first time messing with it at all.
With instructions above, this update was like a walk in the park…actually easier then that :)
    Thank you!!!

  • Jeff

I didn’t backup m contacts…Is there anyway that I can get it back?

  • Mark

Downloaded the 2.2 and it installed fine. The market is a little slower, but everything else is faster. AT&T telephone tech support could not help me with Wi-Fi scanning issues, but this fixed the problem. Now I need to find an app that prevents some of the pre-installed apps from running, like Media Hub and Voice Searching, every few minutes.

  • thebeans444

Hey anyone try this with a Rogers Canadian Samsung galaxy s captivate? Is it possible or does it have to be the unlocked at&t version only? Just wondering if I should even buy cause android 2.1 blows!

  • Sreenivas

I have Samsung Captivate (AT&T version). Upgraded t0 2.2. All seems to be fine but stopped pairing up with my car’s bluetooth (BMW X5). It says pairing completed (Cannot SYNC contacts hence would not allow you to make calls through in-built Car phone). Anyone has any thoughts? Love the interafce with 2.2 but had to goback to 2.1 due to the issue with blue tooth.
    Thanks

  • dennis

    stuck at yellow downloading screen

    this is what Odin says

    Added!!
    Odin v.3 engine (ID:6)..
    File analysis..
    Get PIT for mapping..
    Firmware update start..
    Completed..
All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)

  • valboeski

still no luck. Odin stuck on:
    1. “file analysis”, how long should it take?
    2. Yellow “0:[com4]”
    3. Yellow “1:[com4]”

tried everything; sim card removal, etc. all drivers up to date.

  • argyle64

I just did this update and it works great so far. My only glitch is not being able to remove the bluetooth symbol from the far left side of my notification bar. Something Remote SIM Mode.

  • argyle64

I was finally able to remove the BT symbol by rebooting the phone. Now everything works perfectly. I’m very happy with the update.

  • akzorz

Just would like to note to get phone into Download mode on a Samsung captivate Press both vol. up and down then plug in usb (connected to the computer) while the phone is off and you are g2g.

    Yw, Akzorz

  • kevinc

yep the usb drivers were the only thing that got me.. the samsung drivers are not the same as the usb drivers. i assumed they were the same, so i only installed the samsung ones.. you must get both. otherwise, it works great, jsut have to reinstall everything again…..;(

  • A V

My phone bricked while doing this! Help! It has a black screen and won’t turn on :(

  • Naftali Amir

WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO GO FROM 2.2 BACK to 2.1

  • Micah

Just did this and worked flawlessly. Steps to get it to work (see above) :P Ok

Primary thing that was already mentioned. Install all drivers that it talks about even if you don’t think you need it. Then follow the steps specifically. Once it starts, walk away and let it do it’s thing. When you hear the phone restarting then come back.

  • fahad4u

pleeeez help me i couldn’t upgrade my samsnug galaxy captivate, i dont no how ? would some one help me

  • Non

do you need to install the driver to download the odin3 file?

  • Non

generally how long should it take

  • Me-That-Guy

    Hi All,

Performed the upgrade. It did hang during the first attempt at analyzing files. I powered off, removed and replaced the battery. At this point the phone was bricked (there was a icon of a phone connected to a PC on the screen). After wiping the sweat from my forehead, I unplugged then reconnected the the phone to the PC, ignored the icon and started the process again. This time it worked like a champ.

I like the upgrade, it seems to be running faster, or maybe I just want to feel that I didn’t waste my time doing this upgrade.

Just remember to perform a backup of your data before attempting the upgrade. All apps and contacts will be wiped.

  • Randy

Can anyone verify that the 2.2 upgrade includes “Swype” keyboard? Don’t want to lose that!

  • Andrew

Just installed this myself, and Swype is included still. I had no trouble completing the upgrade, and it is working fantastic! Reinstalling all my apps as we speak; all my contacts and SD card data was saved after the upgrade.

  • Josh

I own a Samsung Captivate, performed the upgrade to 2.2, despite what my “experts” have said, and I am very impressed with the results. All of the features like flash, turning in maps, pinch to zoom albums, even smoother usage, all are true. if you don’t mess up the install, your galaxy s phone should be able to run this update with no problems.

  • Andres

I just didnt it and was completed in 4 minutes, way faster than before and the new freatures are great!!!

  • Ahmad Haidir

Hi, I want to buy unlocked captivate to use with my country gsm carrier. my question is, will the phone locked after update to 2.2? anybody have an idea?

  • Roy

this update is good, thanks, im 17 and it worked really fast and now my samsung captivate is worth the money i spent, no point of waiting for ATT too release the update PEOPLE DOWNLOAD THIS NOW, it works.

  • Cash

so far so good. make sure to turn phone off, then press both up/down volume buttons, then plug the cord in.

  • Ahmad Haidir

@Cash you mean up and down botton together or either one during cord in?

  • Ahmad Haidir

Hi, I want to buy unlocked captivate to use with my country gsm carrier. my question is, will the phone locked after update to 2.2? anybody have an idea ?

  • O’Neal

Updated two days ago and I must say that I am impressed. I am now able to use the tether feature as well as get access to the Media Hub, real cool. Oh, as far as saving contacts, I saved all 700+ contacts to my SD card as a v-card and not to the SIM and was able to load back after the upgrade. This way you can keep all info in your contacts. The only issue that I am having is with my work e-mail (via exchange web). Now that I have upgraded when I reply to e-mails my text does not get sent, only the original e-mail unless I delete the original e-mail. Also, I can no longer accept meeting requests.

Other than the e-mail issue and am really happy with the release and it is verry fast and manages the power consumption much better.

    Great job

  • Keith

Will this fix the Market issue im having with my phone its a Captivate

  • matt

bit more laggy will i be able to upgrade to afficial 2.2 when it comes out?

  • Brandon.

Cool update, some new things, BUT. i found it extremely stupid that i backed up my apps with *three* different apps, and now i can’t re-install them all because of “security settings”.

  • Brandon.

ALSO- THEY Took away the ANDROID KEYBOARD!! WHY!!! The samsung keyboard is good, but: you can’t take away the vibrate and sound click. This is annoying because if you type fast, it sometimes lags/is very annoying. not happy about that. voice is on all keyboards now, which are only swype and the samsung one. Swype now..

  • Bharath

It worked. Yeah.. It worked. nice one. Thanks..

  • Robbie

I did it and it works great… the only thing that happened was I lost the android keyboard… is there anyway I can get it back?

  • Mark

Anyone have issues reconnecting to their wi fi network? Upgraded to FROYO last night and I cannot connect WiFi, it remembers it, then disables it… !!!! Help!

  • Derald

Installed and it is great. A lot faster and seems more stable. Only one problem and it was a big. Mail client has problem with replying when using exchange active sync. Instead of sending a reply, it sends the same message back to the original sender. Had to install Touchdown for my exchange mail.

  • Camden Satterwhite

I just did it i love it my phone is moving faster than ever.

  • Phil

Works well. The only problem I am having is with the default email client like others have mentioned. K9 works well as replacement. Also, cannot seem to find a working way to root the phone. Anyone else?

  • Mark

OK, in re: my above comments, “Anyone have issues reconnecting to their wi fi network? Upgraded to FROYO last night and I cannot connect WiFi, it remembers it, then disables it… !!!!”

I have been able to connect to outside services (IE WIFi locations) but NOT the home network unless I have the encryption disabled, basically unsecuring my network.. what is the fix for this ? Thanks for any feedback…

  • Mark

    also… I am using a 2Wire Wireless router (AT&T) about 4′ away ……

  • Bill

WARNING this works great unless you have a corp email account that requires a pin to be activated looks like this is not in this version. Does anyone know of a newer version that has this feature?

  • vdan

    i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!thanks!

  • http://invasionbyidea@gmail.com Eddie

I couldn’t get the odid program to recognize my phone and some of the comments are frightening. Personally, I like the features of serendipity rom but don’t have the time to fiddle around in dos for hours. I would like to use flash and gps but I don’t think at&t will update the software any time soon, if it all.

  • Tyler

This worked great!! Install the drivers for sure!! Make sure you know how to out your phone into download mode… most people get it wrong!

  • weili

Man, what a difference on Android 2.2. I just upgraded my Captivate 1/2 hour ago. The phone runs noticeably faster. I installed flash!!! Love it. Thanks, thanks, thanks.

The upgrade process is in general smooth, although there are some scary moments. First of all, the Samsung USB driver is not electronically certified on either Windows XP and windows 7. I finally choose Windows 7 to upgrade. At the end of the process, it gives out some error message, saying installation not successful. But eventually, the phone reboots itself and everything works.

Reading previous comments. I don’t have problem with WIFI at home with encryption turned on as Mark posted. But I do find the Android keyboard is gone, which is very annoying. Look through market, and didn’t find it there. Not sure how to get it back.

  • Gus

Guys, it worked only for mi Captivate but I am already 3 hours trying to get to the download mode with my girlfriend’s and it is impossible..
Is there any other way to do it?
    Thanks!!!

  • davis

problem was i was going to the boot loader screen not the downloader screen. volume buttons while plugging in usb fixed stuck at analyzing files message. froyo is great! cant wait for a gingerbread that actually has a camera ;)

  • Matt

    Worked great! Very simple install.

  • Naftali Amir

I updated my Captivate to 2.2 several weeks ago and everything works fine. I have all my pictured arranged in various folders and saved on an external SD card. Lately I noticed that when viewing the pictures using the phone Gallery several of the folder indicate several duplicate of the picture (some time 1 duplicate some time multiple). I deleted all the Thumbnail folders but the duplicate pictures remain. Any idea what cause it and how to fix it?

  • Fry Sauce

Love the download and the Hotspot feature… I really want the android keyboard back, however. Does anybody know where I can get this? The samsung keyboard doesn’t appear to have the spellcheck feature that the android one did and I absolutely love that on a virtual keyboard.

  • MIKEY K

Is there a way to download froyo to my captivate over the the air without using a PC?

  • suckstobeme

Update hung and the odin installer crashed. Bricked my phone after doing this. I can’t get it back to download mode. Any suggestions how to get this back?

  • suckstobeme

    Thank goodness.
I wasn’t able to put it back into download mode initially but if you remove the battery, sim card, and then do the following.
    1. connect the usb cable
    2. hold down the volume buttons
    3. then insert the battery, it should go back to download mode.
    Then you can try again.

Just updated my captivate, and it appears to be looking nice! As mentioned by others, you will lose all you data, so back up any pics / vids. Also, you contacts (just lost them all… doh!).

  • Jacob3

What are the consequences of not backing up?

Finally took the plunge after weeks of wringing my hands worrying I’d break my phone and just plain PO’d that Samsung and ATT can’t get their act together.

Took over an hour to download, 10 minutes to install, and I have a brand new phone that is fan-freakin-tastic. The new UI is beautiful, the phone is LIGHTNING FAST, which is a stark difference from how it was behaving over the past 2 months, GPS is fixed, new keyboard is sweet, voice CONTROL, and Skype!!

    Woo hoo! Thank yoU!

  • Ravi

Finally, Finally updated took 20 mins to download and 10 mins to install. The second day Phone switched off had to remove battery and restart. The screens lag sometime but good overall. Could not get rid of ATT CRAP!!!

  • Brian

Thanks for the clear instructions. Vista hiccuped a bit on the device driver, but once installed the installer worked like a champ. Hope this improves my GPS performance on the Captivate. Thanks again!

am i supposed to see one ‘FAIL’ on ODIN when doing this? It looks like my phone successfully updated to 2.2, but I saw a fail on ODIN.

  • Kenn

After trying other’s instructions unsuccessfully for a week, I tried this one. It worked on the first attempt. No rooting, etc. Just follow the instructions and success!!! Thanks a bunch!!!

  • Dustin

Painless install. Worked flawlessly. I just wish I wasn’t too lazy to back up all my apps!

  • Maggie

Worked like a charm, but not on the first attempt using Windows 7. I had to use a Windows Vista computer, and install the 64-bit drivers first, but then completed swiftly and successfully!

I didn’t lose any contacts or photos on the camera, but did lose the previously installed apps. Thanks so much – hopefully this resolves my issue of the phone powering off intermittently!

  • Adam

Worked like a dream. Had Froyo on my phone in under 20 minutes from start to finish.

I HATE 2.2. After I updated my phone, it began to send my text messages to the wrong people. For example, I would be typing a message with the name “Chris” at the top and it would send the message to “Tiffany” or no one at all. Now, the only way I can send text messages is by deleting that message, finding their name in my phone, and sending them a new message. I’m going to the iPhone.

  • Mike D

Thanks, just installed no problems seems to work fine….Easy as pie!

Target is selling Captivate with Android 2.2 ONLY in stores (per their weekly advertisement for the period 2/20/2011 to 2/26/2011). Can someone confirm this? I have seen this advertisement in print as well as online.

My girlfriend just picked up a Captivate, salesperson told us it runs 2.2 but it’s 2.1. Great features in 2.1 but heard 2.2 is worth the upgrade.

Is it going to be available from AT&T or Samsung anytime soon? I’m getting one early March.

  • John

Tried twice with odin recognizing my phone fine, it just goes from firmware update start to completed and then all threads complete, but I still have 2.1

  • Garrick

it says that there is another driver for this device and i need to uninstall it but i do not know what it is please help

  • Tolga

I tried this about 6 weeks ago and it works great. Samsung finally released the official update on its website 5 days ago. Here is the link:
    http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/jsp/faqs/faqs_view_us.jsp?SITE_ID=22&PG_ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=558&AT_ID=368733

I wonder if anyone tried both the official version and the leaked version, and whether it is worth the trouble to switch to the official release.

  • Jen

I tried the offical release and it worked great! It will show you all that you need to download and walk you through it. Also, I backed up my contacts but it kept all of my downloaded apps! So glad I did this!

  • Madison

I have the Captivate, and I want to do the update, but I’m not sure on how to back up data, and contacts. Reason why I haven’t done so yet. Is there anyone that could possibly explain how to do this? Thanks in advance!

  • Ankur

I am using an unlocked version of Captivate. If I update my android 2.1 to 2.2, will my phone get locked??

  • Ankur

I am using an unlocked version of the phone with 2.1 version. If I update it to 2.2 , will my phone get locked?

  • O’Neal

I loaded the leaked version of Frodo, Android 2.2, can I load the official release?

How do I do that, when I try Kies Mini does not do anything?

  • Dai

Though some features are great… some are a p.o.f.s.
–Please lets all band together and hopefully we can get the powers that be, have an update to get rid of the following/Improve on the following
–YouTube – keeps restarting annoying as heck and not everyone is so focused on crap that has to have it 24/7
–Hot Spots – Keeps restarting kick it to the curb.
–Tethering – am not gonna pay them that much more a month when it would be far less expensive somewhere else.
–Battery life has been cut by almost 20% – NOT COOL -_- NOT COOL AT ALL
–All of my pictures keep getting sent to a dark corner of my memory card and get deleted from from my gallery.
–NOTE TO ALL if you have not updated PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING!!!
    — ALL pictures are now geotagged by default. So if you are concerned about your privacy, DO NOT update. There is a work around but its a pain on the Gluteous Maximus.
    — Phone freezes constantly at least 1-2 times per DAY/.
Some of the things that are freaking awesome, is the keyboard now has the space bar slide to different languages… FREAKING COOL!
A bunch of other features that make the phone even better than it was but as pointed above some seem to be taking a step back instead of forward.
