So what do you do when your the Apple marketing chief and it's the eve of the Samsung Galaxy S IV announcement? You do a little trash talking, but in this case Phil Shiller didn't really go after Samsung, but instead went after Android as a whole. Where do we begin? He started off by saying that products that run the Android software are inferior to Apple's iPhone. He went down the fragmentation path as he said that a lot of Android users are running old operating systems. In his defense, that is absolutely correct. Only about 15% of Android users are actually running Jelly Bean. In Android's defense, I will say that most consumers aren't all that concerned with that.
He continued with, “Android is often given as a free replacement for a feature phone and the experience isn't as good as an iPhone.” Overall, Shiller thinks Android's weakness is a result of many manufacturers making phones whereas Apple is in complete control of the hardware. Again a very true statement and is definitely the reason for fragmentation, but unfortunately Android as a whole is still the better OS. The consumer is the judge of that. According to Gartner, the iPhone represented 19.1% of the global market share while Android had 66.4% in 2012. Of course Mr. Shiller will give you a different story as their research suggests that four times as many iPhone users switched from an Android phone than to an Android phone in the fourth quarter 2012. He also downplayed market share estimates by saying, “I'm not sure that the estimates and the modeling accurately gives an accurate picture of it all.”
This outburst was obviously out of anger as Android has astounded even myself with the amount of growth it has achieved in the last couple of years. At the same time, Samsung is now a force to be reckoned with. Samsung is now the face of Android and they will announce a new phone tomorrow that will prove to be yet another thorn in Apple's side. Shiller makes some valid points, but talking isn't what sells phones. It's innovation and something Apple has lacked for a while now.

It is inferior. No phone out there has the refinement that the iPhone has. Every other phone feels like a slopped together piece of junk.
This is just a fact and I speak from personal experience.
It’s not fact. It’s about FEELINGS.
I believe ANDROIDPHONES are MUCH SMARTER iPHONES, I know Someone PERSONALLY Who has a(n) iPhone on STRAIGHTTALK, And She **LIKE**d the SPRINT HTC-EVO 3D the COUSIN of My T-MOBILE HTC SENSATION 4G
Proper English and a whole lot less Caps Lock use please!?!
… And we will continue to sell obsolete technology as new one in every single apple product because our customers are…
This dude Schiller must be seriously on meds or smoking some serious weed. He’s a comical uneducated simpleton the typical apple person lost in their own reasoning. Apple products are comically boring, dull, and sadly a poor day to day experience. Pathetic user experience and piss poor functionality simply a useless bunch of icons with no user enhancements or future implementations. Thank god android isn’t apple android users experience top experience on most devices on today’s market. My Galaxy Note 2 pisses on all apple products.
iPhone needs a big advantage over android in order to justify higher profit margins. People used to count on Apple as innovators but it is Samsung that is delivering on multi-view and touchless hovering.
Of course Apple will bash Samsung and Android phones, especially on the eve of Samsung revealing the Galaxy S 4. But Samsung and Android phones are really killing Apple and the iPhone in basically every objective critieria. Even worse than that for Apple, as between Apple and Samsung, Samsung is now the innovator of the two. Innovation was the thing that made Apple stand out, and it was where Apple used to have the edge. Now Apple seems to have almost stopped innovating.
Plain and Simple, Apple is stagnate! They offer very little if anything new even on the iPhone 5. Oh, gee, slightly bigger screen! Not by much though. My brother owns a iPhone and it’s still running a VERY outdated version of the OS because of the model ( Sound familiar? HTC Evo 4G? ) without any chance of an upgrade in sight. They’re just as guilty of this as any Android OEM. To this day you can’t get one with a Removable Battery or SDCard ( Again, HTC Anyone? Oh and Nexus too! ). Their iOS is bland, boring, non-user customizable ( Same with their OSX and yes I speak from experience ).
Apple is a BORING computer company and they’re carrying this over to the Mobile end of things. They designed the iPhone and didn’t build half of it themselves if any of it. They use others technology and take claims to it. All they’re good for is wasting tax payers money by tying up our court system with their stupid litigation against anything Android because they refuse to compete on a innovative level. Their marketing as it has always, sucks. Which is why they have never taken over on any market other than the iPod. Which I seriously hear less and less about each passing year, why? Oh, could it be because Android devices do this just as well and people are using their Android devices for this now as apposed to having two separate devices to lug around? Hmmmm….
Apple is a complete waste of time and space right now. They offer nothing new, what they do offer has been done before and out for a very long time. This guy needs to go back to school and learn what it is to be innovative!
Can’t blame him really … Android marketshare vs iphone is apples to pears. The financial threshold for an iOS device is higher and there’s no such thing as a budget iOS device. The same is not true for Android devices. I’d like to see some market share figures of the few high end android phones available compared to iOS devices. My guess is the figures wouldn’t be far apart. That being said … Im writing this on my HTC One X+, after 4+ years with an iPhone. Both have their (dis)advantages, cant say which is better. It’s the old mac vs. Windows discussion of the mobile world.
Just one device alone, the Galaxy S III….. Over 30 million sold, not even counting the Note II. So with Samsung alone, not counting HTC and Sony’s latest as well as the new S IV, yeah Apple doesn’t hold a card to them! And Android IS the better OS by a long-shot due to Customization. Regardless what version you’re running!
As a former owner and user of two iPhones I am happier with the experience I have with my current Android phone. Much happier. The screen of the iPhone 5 above looks exactly the same as the first iPhone I owned back in 2007. Apple is mired in the past, no wonder he’s angry and scared.
But I wonder, Phil, how many iPhones are out there running older IOS? Even IOS on an IPhone 4S is skinned down. I would much rather have an older Android running the full version of Gingerbread with a nice launcher like Holo than an older iPhone running a skinned down version of IOS. But that’s just me, I’m not a Crapple Zombie.
He’s right about the fragmentation, but that doesn’t mean the answer is Apple.
And no, a cheap Android phone isn’t going to be as good as an iPhone, but an iPhone isn’t as good as a high end Android (e.g. no NFC, no removable battery, little choice of size, limited bluetooth, etc.)
Apple should work on fixing it’s own problems before complaining about the problems of other platforms. Criticizing is easy. Offering consumers choice, features and value has never been Apple’s strong suit.
He is afraid because iphone 5 is not that good and iOS look old. He know that It’s a product for average people who don’t know what to buy like Nokia 10 years ago.
This type of BS coming from Apple, only serves me to advise EVERYONE to stay away from them. I have many people on Facebook and in person come to me when they want to get a new phone, and so far, not one of them have chosen Apple after speaking with me.
Two iPhone users have switched to Android phones after seeing mine and playing around with it. Methinks the Shill is running scared.
let barking dogs bark.
Does anyone give a rats behind about what he has to say!
hes just butt hurting. thats all.
