For one to say that this whole “Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III locked boot-loader” fiasco has been tumultuous would be quite the understatement. First, Samsung acknowledged the locked boot-loader and stated that it’s the direction they have and always will believe in. Soon after, Samsung and Verizon announced a “developer” edition of their Galaxy S III that will feature an un-locked boot-loader tailor made for developers and hackers. While that made some happy, it came with a hefty $599 price tag and obviously doesn’t do much for the customers that have already purchased or pre-ordered their Verizon Galaxy S III.
Now in a sudden, and quite surprising twist, it seems as if Samsung and Verizon are planning on a software update that will un-lock the Galaxy S III’s boot-loader. Several customers have reportedly been receiving e-mails from Verizon customer service reps acknowledging a supposed software update that will un-lock the boot-loader. Here’s one of the emails that a reader from Droid Life received from Verizon:
My name is Levar and thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless about the boot loader for the Galaxy S3. I know this may be frustrating but there will be a solution soon coming. Samsung will be releasing a software update to unlock your device. Right now, we do not have a date for the release but it shall be soon.
Verizon Wireless appreciates you as a customer and your patience in this matter.
Have a great weekend!
It is also safe to say that “some” customer service reps aren’t as informative as they should be on issues such as these. Thus, when I read e-mails like these I tend to read it carefully making sure that the service rep wasn’t confused and could possibly be referring to a different matter. This e-mail seems fairly clear cut and straight to the point regarding the locked boot-loader. If this isn’t enough evidence for you, there’s more! Soon after receiving these e-mails from their readers, a Droid Life’s Kellex decided to see for himself and hopped on a live chat with a Verizon representative:
If this still isn’t enough proof for you, then perhaps an e-mail from a Samsung representative acknowledging the exact same thing will finally ease your mind.
And there it is folks, 3 completely different sources claiming that a supposed software update provided by Samsung will un-lock the boot-loader of your Verizon Galaxy S III. Sadly, no timetable has been given by any of these sources, but we can only hope that it’s relatively sooner than later.
What do you guys make of this? Do you think this was the plan all along? Perhaps Samsung was irked by the fact that Verizon had the only locked boot-loader version of their Galaxy S III and wanted to take matters into their own hands and provide the software update. Or just maybe, Verizon actually listened to the outcry of the developer and hacking community that they locked the boot-loader in the first place. Either way, if this ends up all being true, then this is definitely a win-win situation for all parties involved.
