Amazon Appstore could finally open in Europe this Summer

The Amazon Appstore has been around for a little over a year now, but it’s only available to U.S. residents. I’m not sure why they didn’t release it all over the world, but it looks like Europe may be the first area outside the U.S. to get a taste of it. All Things D is reporting that Amazon will announce next week that they are accepting submissions from developers soon.

The timing of this is interesting since sales of the Kindle Fire are starting to show declines. Amazon sold 4.8 million units in the 4th quarter 2011, but only 750,000 in the 1st quarter of this year. This was obviously due to Holiday sales, but that’s a pretty big drop. This might have been part of the plan all along, but it certainly can’t hurt Amazon to start selling Kindle Fire’s in more areas. Not to mention the Google Nexus tablet (and possibly an iPad Mini) is looming.
