Star Droid Star Gazing App From Google
Google are planning to release a star gazing application for the Android platform in the next few weeks. Star Droid will allow users to use their Android phones to identify star constellations in the night sky.
The Star Droid app will use Android’s built-in GPS technology to match the position of the device with existing maps of space, and attach relevant name tags to the stars and planets that can be seen through the phone’s viewfinder.
The Star Droid application will be available free to download from the Android Market, and is expected to appear in the Market soon.

There is an app in the market that does this already… Presumably Google’s will be better?

Yep, there’s already one that does that… “Sky Map” and it freakin’ rocks! Come on, Google, focus on stuff that matters, like system-wide multi-touch. Maybe even a graphic EQ for the music app.

Why can’t we not have flash player, that wud be a better apps. Instead of star gazing or whatever.

@Bob Dole:
Indeed, I hope they fix the multi-touch.. (without modifying the phone), screw Apple and their lame ‘patents’.

I had a star finder app that was suupposedly upgraded to Google sky Map, which is prettier but doesn’t use GPS to enable star/constellation identification. I’d rather be able to point at a star and identify it than have a pretty map with no frame of reference. Is there an app that allows me to point to a star/constellation and identify it? If so, how would I download it to my G1? Thanks! Pat O’Connor

Has anyone heard if there will be an app like this for the iPhone? I am an avid star gazer and I would LOVE to have this app!
