It’s always annoying when you get a new anything and there’s things wrong with it. “How can they of made this without knowing about these problems?” You think. “They wouldn’t of released this if they knew about them.” That thought probably crossed your mind also. But what if companies like Motorola and Verizon knew about issues on their upcoming Droid 2 but planned on launching with those issues anyway? Well apparently that’s going to happen.

What you’re about to read is supposedly a leaked email from a Verizon rep about the known issues launching with the Droid 2.

Subcategory Voice Call Operations:

  • 1X Mode Power Down: If the Droid2 is powered off while in 1X coverage, incoming calls will not go directly to voicemail.

Short term work around: There is no known work around.

Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue is under review and will be included in a future maintenance release of software for this device.

  • Ringtone Selection Playback: If the orientation is changed while playing ringtones during selection, the ringtone will stop playing.

Short term work around:There is no known work around.  The customer should not change orientation when selecting ringtones.

Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue is under review and will be included in a future maintenance release of software for this device.

  • Recent Call Contact Pictures: Recent call log will momentarily display incorrect contact pictures.

Short term work around: There is no known work around.

Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue is under review and will be included in the first maintenance release of software for this device.

Subcategory 3G Mobile Hot Spot:

  • Devices can Connect, but no Data Connections are Created: Devices can connect to the Droid2, but cannot establish data connections.  Customers may see timeout errors on the devices trying to connect to the Droid2.

Short term work around: The Droid2 needs to be power cycled.

Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue is under review and will be included in the first maintenance release of software for this device.

  • Camera Self Portrait Mode: The camera Self Portrait mode does not work. The Droid2 will display an error message, “no faces were found, self shot timed out”.

Short term work around: There is no known work around.

Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue is under review and will be included in the second maintenance release of software for this device.

Category: Applications

Subcategory: Verizon Wireless Branded

  • Visual Voicemail:  When a new VVM subscriber attempts to subscribe via the “Subscribe to Visual Voice Mail” button, the customer may see an error message “You are not provisioned user. Self Provisioning failed due to network error, please call customer support”.

Short term work around: If the customer presses Cancel in the pop-up message, the next attempt will be successful.

Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue is under review and will be included in the first maintenance release of software for this device.

  • Visual Voicemail: When selecting speaker mode while using a mono Bluetooth headset, may cause audio to be still played through the headset.

Short term work around: Toggle speaker during message playback.  This may require more than one attempt.

Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue is under review and will be included in a future maintenance release of software for this device.

  • Visual Voicemail: VVM notification SMS, which are not normally displayed to the customer, may be present.

Short term work around: There is no known work around.  The customer should delete the SMS.

Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue is under review and will be included in a future maintenance release of software for this device.

So whattya think? Is this going to dissuade you from purchasing Verizon’s latest entry into the Android pool? Should the phone not be released until these errors are fixed?

    That’s a lot of issues.

Feels like Motorola rushed the Droid 2.

While it does seem like a lot of issues, they are fairly minor ones at that. The only ones that are kind of “major” are the self-portrait and data hotspot bugs.

  • ari-free

    nothing a good custom rom couldn’t fix…oh wait…

  • Charles

Even if it is a small problems, the apple iiphone fanboys are going to jump on this and rip on our problems. Don’t rush things Motorola!

  • keith

typical motorola…. at least since it is on verizon the updates will be pushed quickly. not like the backflip and cliq that took months for a simple bug fix and are still on 1.5.

Have a D2 and yep, hotspot disconnects in 5 minutes. Tech support tells me that its a defective phone and to take it back. Oh what fun.

No mass-market high-tech device or software in the history of the world has ever shipped without these sorts of known issues. In engineering there is always a trade-off between features, quality, development time and cost. For mass-market applications, perfect quality requires unacceptable compromises in one of the other areas.

If Motorola holds onto their product for another six months to improve quality, you the consumers are not going to reward them for it. You are going to punish them by buying the product of their competitor which comes out sooner and cheaper –and a little more buggy. It is the consumers who ultimately decide what trade-offs are acceptable, and the companies are just responding to what you demand.

Printing this email was dirty pool. It deceives customers into thinking that Motorola is being somehow unethical when they are just practicing good engineering.

And by the way, I have no connection to Motorola or Verizon except for being the somewhat dissatisfied owner of a Droid. They really should have gone for higher quality before releasing the Droid :) .

Honestly, this list consists entirely of relatively minor issues.

Unfortunately, the Droid 2 I bought had far more severe bugs that I simply couldn’t live with (like burning through the last 40% of its battery during my 30 min subway ride home, randomly switching text entry modes in the middle of typing an email, ridiculous lags and inconsistencies in responding to touchscreen input, etc).

I don’t mind a few glitches, because no device is perfect, but I was encountering oddities far too often. The rep I dealt with said it’s possible I had a dud battery (but then totally enfuriated me by suggesting the two year old AT&T BlackBerry Curve that I was used to might simply have had “an overperforming battery”).

Its funny, apple releases a phone with ONE problem, and its the end of the world. But motorola releases one with a SLEW of problems and everyone says “There goes motorola again” and ignores most of them. The worst thing is, MOTOROLA HAS THE SAME ANTENNAGATE, BUT YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE TO TOUCH IT! haha…

Every One of the 5 cell phones I had since the year 2,000 when I first got a cellphone had flaws. Not to mention the computers, TVs, etc.
I’ve looked at user reviews of many smart phones, and regular phones. Most phones, (and other devices) seem to be released with these known flaws. Maybe this strategy is to keep consumers coming back for improved product – which never materializes. Or maybe There is no perfect product . It would be nice if consumers were giving a list of the products known defects when they buy it. I guess that is what the Internet is for. Something to consider is that it is amazing what these devices actually do when they work . And even what they do when they’re not functioning properly. However we would like to see advertising that stated the products flaws alongside its features. That will never happen.
