Android 12 introduces a lot of new features for increased accessibility and convenience. Alongside the one-handed mode, you can now swipe along the bottom ridges of the screen to trigger Google Assistant if you're finding the voice prompt to be a misfire, swipe to invoke assistant is a great shortcut you can start using today.

Swipe to invoke a new accessibility shortcut to quickly toggle Google assistant. Other OEM's do offer their own solution such as holding down the power button or the home button, but this feature is new to Android 12. It is far more convenient and maybe even faster.

Note: The following was done on a Pixel 4A 5G. The steps may vary depending on your OEM. The easiest and fastest way to find the feature is to search for ‘invoke assistant in the search bar in your setting app. In addition, This feature can only be used on Gesture Navigation, 3-button navigation users will be unable to use the feature.

The first thing you will need to do is open up your Settings.

Navigate to the bottom and look for System.

Open System, and navigate to Gestures. Open up System Navigation.

In System Navigation, tap on the gear next to Gesture Navigation.

You will now see the toggle for Swipe to invoke assistant. You can further adjust the sensitivity along the left and right edges of the screen, but the middle will help prevent accidentally triggering it when picking up your phone.

From here you can further configure which side of the screen you would like the feature to trigger. There is no way to turn off detection on either side, but setting it to low will reduce the likelihood of triggering it. When you have set up your phone accordingly, simply run your thumb or finger along the left or right edge of the screen to the center of your display, and the prompt should work.

If you are having trouble getting it to run, try adjusting the sensitivity further or changing the side of the gesture. Sometimes the screen protector can cause issues. Depending on your settings too, you can further trigger this prompt from the lock screen too for quick information such as seeing the weather or getting a quick trivia answer.
