The Phenomenon of Persona
Persona. The name might not be instantly familiar, or it could bring to mind images of midnight battles and masked heroes. If you’re a fan of JRPGs—or video games in general—chances are, you’ve played at least one installment in this celebrated franchise. Starting in the late 1990s, Persona games have captivated players around the world, earning especially strong followings in countries like France and Japan. Of the five main entries in the Persona series, the last three have received high marks on Metacritic, ranging from 83 to an impressive 95 out of 100.
Netflix Steps Into the Persona Universe
While many fans have been anticipating updates on the Persona 4 remake and the next title, Persona 6, Netflix added a surprising development this summer. On Monday, June 29, 2026, Variety reported that Netflix had begun production on a live-action series based on the Persona universe. This isn’t uncharted territory for Netflix; the streaming platform has already found success adapting game properties like Arcane (set in the world of League of Legends), the live-action series The Witcher, and the animated Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Who’s Bringing Persona to the Screen?
According to Variety, Netflix tapped Christopher Monfette for the adaptation. Monfette’s previous credits include work on Star Trek: Picard and the series 9-1-1. He is collaborating with 21 Laps—the production company behind Stranger Things and Deadpool & Wolverine—and Story Kitchen, a studio known for adapting video game stories, currently at work on the Life is Strange adaptation for Prime Video. This experienced team could mean big things for fans hoping for a faithful adaptation.
Which Persona Story Will Netflix Adapt?
The announcement has sparked excitement and speculation within the fan base. The main question: Which Persona story will the series tackle?
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, each Persona game features an independent storyline. It’s entirely possible to jump into titles like Persona 5 without playing the earlier games. Because of this, it's still unclear which game—or games—the Netflix series will draw from. All entries share some core features: each follows a group of teenagers confronting supernatural threats with the help of beings called “Persona,” while also trying to manage day-to-day life at school, studying, playing sports, or spending time with friends.
This mix of the extraordinary and the everyday will likely shape the new series. However, as of now, Netflix hasn't announced any casting or a release date. The only thing that’s certain is that fans will have to be patient as production unfolds.
