When Ryan Gosling had to exit the new film from the Oscar-winning directors of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” in early 2026, fans wondered if the mysterious project might face delays. But the Daniels appear to have found a new star to take the lead: Matt Damon is reportedly in talks for the untitled film, and it seems the script was just too tempting to resist—even if Damon had planned a break after a grueling shoot.

In March 2026, reports emerged that Ryan Gosling was set to headline the next feature from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the duo who stunned Hollywood with their seven-Oscar sweep for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at the 2023 Academy Awards. But only a week after the announcement, news broke that Gosling would have to step away from the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Matt Damon Steps Up

According to Deadline, the Daniels soon focused their attention on Matt Damon to fill the leading role. Damon, who appeared in “L’Odyssée” (released in July 2026), reportedly entered negotiations to join the still-untitled and very secretive film. Very few details have been released—neither the title nor the plot has been made public.

The Script That Changed Damon’s Plans

Sources familiar with the discussions say Damon initially aimed to take some time off following an intensive shoot for a blockbuster directed by Christopher Nolan. However, the Daniels’ screenplay was reportedly enough to pull him straight back into production mode. Filming was expected to begin in Los Angeles by summer 2026, after Damon finished promoting “L’Odyssée.” The film is currently planned for a theatrical release on November 17, 2027.
