Workspace serves more than 4 billion users, so when Google decides to rewire its productivity suite, a lot of people feel it. The I/O 2026 batch of updates is one of the more substantial overhauls the platform has seen — voice is becoming a genuine input method, not just a novelty.

Here's what's new across the suite.

Voice Features in Gmail, Docs, and Keep

Gmail Live lets you search your inbox using natural speech while you're on the go. Ask it something like “what's my flight's gate number,” and it synthesizes the answer from your emails without you having to dig. Docs Live takes a similar idea further — it acts as a co-writer you can talk to, pulling relevant context from your Gmail, Drive, and the web to structure a first draft from a rambling voice session.

Keep gets the most laid-back version of this: you just brain dump out loud, and the app organizes what you said into notes and lists automatically. All three voice features are rolling out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers this summer, with a business preview arriving alongside.

Google Pics: A New Image Creation Tool

Google Pics is a standalone image creation and editing app built on the Nano Banana model, designed to give you precise creative control rather than just rolling the dice on prompts. Key capabilities include object segmentation (select and edit individual elements without affecting the rest of the image), in-image text editing and translation, and real-time collaboration with shared canvases.

Pics integrates into Slides and Drive so you can edit images right where they live. It's launching now to a limited trusted tester group, with a broader Google AI Pro and Ultra rollout coming this summer.

AI Inbox Expands, Gemini Spark Debuts

AI Inbox — Google's smart email prioritization layer inside Gmail — is getting new capabilities, including personalized draft replies, instant access to referenced Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and one-click task management. It's expanding from Ultra subscribers to all Google AI Plus and Pro users in the U.S. now.

Gemini Spark is the most ambitious announcement here. It's a 24/7 personal AI agent that takes action on your behalf — scheduling events, sending emails, managing your digital life — but only within the guardrails you set. It asks before executing high-stakes actions. Workspace integration will arrive in preview for business customers in the Gemini app soon.
