Google Tests PC Backups to Ease Android Storage Woes
The higher the internal storage on your phone, the more expensive the device. For those who chose an Android phone with less space to save money, Google's latest development could be particularly appealing. According to reporting from Android Authority, Google engineers have been working on a feature to help users save storage by moving files—like photos, videos, and audio—from Android devices to their own computers automatically.
How Does It Work?
Instead of keeping all your pictures and videos on the phone, or having to sync them with Google Drive or Google Photos, the new feature would allow select files to be backed up directly to a PC. Android Authority found references to this in a beta version of Google Play Services (v26.15.31 beta), under a feature reportedly called “Automatic backup.” This would let users create backups of specific files right from their Android device to a connected computer.
Currently, most Android users rely on Google Photos for storing images and freeing up storage by deleting what's already in the cloud. However, with unlimited free storage for Google Photos no longer available, this proposed backup method serves as an alternative without monthly fees. Google reportedly indicates this solution is entirely free, and deleting files from your phone would not erase their copies on your PC.
What Can Be Backed Up?
Screenshots shared by Android Authority show the option living in the settings for Quick Share, the Android feature for file sharing. Once the phone connects to a PC, a button would allow users to activate automatic backups. Users could pick what to back up: camera photos, camera videos, and audio files. Android Authority notes this feature appears aimed at compatibility with Windows computers.
When Will It Be Available?
This feature could be a big help for anyone short on storage, but there are caveats. As of April 2026, Google had not made any public announcements about this functionality or confirmed its rollout date. It's also not clear whether this feature would require the upcoming Android 17 update, or if it would be released separately for multiple Android versions. Since details remain unconfirmed, interested users should watch for future updates from Google on this possible storage-saving tool.
