OnePlus has just launched its Nord CE 5G in Europe that sports a 90Hz AMOLED display, 5G connectivity, and an audio jack, but what about a true successor to the original Nord? It seems that plans for the Nord 2 are well underway, with a leak from a reliable source pointing to it being powered by MediaTek's flagship chipset, the Dimensity 1200.
According to @OnLeaks via 91Mobiles, the Nord 2 will be the first OnePlus handset to be powered by a chipset that isn't produced by Qualcomm. If the presence of the Dimensity 1200 power plant is accurate, it would mark a big milestone for the MediaTek brand in its attempts to compete with Qualcomm in the smartphone segment. It looks like there'll be a couple of variants with one offering 8/128GB and the other 12/256GB of RAM and storage. The battery could get a boost from 4,125mAh to 4,500mAh and may benefit from Warp Charge 30T (30W) charging.
Besides the Dimensity 1200 chip, the Nord 2 is said to have a 6.43-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate, which sounds like the panel used in the Nord CE 5G. The report says that the Nord 2 will have a trio of rear cameras that include a 50MP main sensor (Sony IMX766), an 8MP ultra-wide, and a 2MP supplementary sensor that may be a macro, depth, or monochrome lens. Unlike the original Nord, the selfie camera setup is said to be a single 32MP sensor.
At first glance, these leaked specifications for the Nord 2 point to it being a slightly different Nord CE 5G, albeit with a different chipset and an ever so slightly tweaked camera setup.
