Huawei Mate 40 freeform camera

The Huawei Mate 40 is the next anticipated phone from Huawei, but we're still a few months away from any kind of official announcement. That's not going to stop the rumor mill, though.

A new leak suggests that Huawei will adopting a freeform camera lens in the Mate 40, which should improve photos in one key way.

Huawei Mate 40 Freeform Lens

So what exactly is a freeform camera lens? Well, it's a pretty complex piece of tech that allows unique light bending when it captures an image. Using a freeform lens allows a camera to do a better job of capturing higher resolution shots with wider field of views, among other things. The key here, though, is that this should improve wide-angle shots on the Huawei Mate 40 and cause less distortion in photos.

With ultrawide camera lenses becoming more popular in smartphones and useful in all kinds of situation, it's bound to be the next thing that manufacturers focus on. It's an easy improvement that allows the user to simply capture more detail in a scene, and is probably one of the most useful upgrades we've had in phones recently.

Aside from the newer camera tech, we're also hearing that Huawei will be using a new 5nm Kirin CPU with the Mate 40. It'll likely use Cortex-A77 or Cortex-A78 cores, which should offer a pretty major performance jump over the Kirin 990 CPU.

But, as always, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro doesn't look like it'll be using Google Play Services, either. Huawei's still struggling with what to do without Google's support, and even the absolute best hardware on the market can't help much when someone can't grab their favorite apps.
