Asus Zenfone 6 leaked in all its slightly wonky glory 3

Asus is only hours from launching their next value flagship but a fresh full leak reveals it will sport a near-bezelless display and wonky but versatile flipping camera system.

Nobody expected much from Asus' Zenfone 5 and 5Z ‘iClones' last year and so we were pleasantly surprised when the phones turned out to be great – if not the best – considering the company’s history of meh-worthy phones.

With the Zenfone 5/Z Asus had found an interesting middle-ground between the premium and the mid-range; with quality design in the identical phones and the sole differences being the Snapdragon 636 vs 845 chipsets and $400 and $500 price points.

Being otherwise identical meant you had the positive and negative consequences where you either got a premium mid-ranger, or a mid-ranging premium.

Unfortunately though, this did mean that phones like the OnePlus 6 were generally the better choice over the 5Z, whilst the 5 presented a reasonably strong front.

We saw some horrific prototype Asus phones which were notched to the max last year, but Asus alleviated fears of such designs when they teased the upcoming Zenfones two weeks ago with a near-bezelless display, leading everyone to believe they had gone with a slider design like the recent OnePlus 7 Pro.

Nope!
Turns out to get that huge display Asus has instead gone with the incredibly rare, inordinately vulnerable, but extremely versatile ‘flipping' camera system where the rear sensors can suddenly transform to front-facing.

This means that unlike literally every other phone on the market, barring the very few which share flipping cameras, the quality of ‘selfie' shots will be identical to the rear, whilst also cutting down on costs for sensors.

Alongside the design, though, the leak also revealed that the Zenfone 6 (will there still be two versions?) will feature the same 48MP Sony IMX586 primary camera as the OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, and a plethora of other devices on the market, and a modest 13MP ultra-wide secondary sensor.

The Zenfone 6 will apparently feature a 1080p+ AMOLED display under Gorilla Glass 6, the Snapdragon 855, (presumably) 6/8GB of RAM and 64/128GB of ROM, and all powered by a mammoth 5000mAh battery with Qualcomm's 18W Quick Charge 4.0.

I'd also expect the phone to launch at $500 for the base model.

Needless to say, there's a lot to like about the prospective Zenfone 6 – the 5000mAh battery is especially insanely impressive if it is somehow true – and as odd, and potentially vulnerable as the flipping camera setup will be, it's certainly the epitome of function.

We'll soon get all the details confirmed though when the phone launches in just under 24 hours – stay tuned to Talk Android!

  1. I just feel like some OEMs are trying too hard to “hide” the camera lens. OP and their popup selfie camera. Now, this. Both designs look awkward. Just leave the damn camera on the screen somewhere!

    1. I love the Meizu 16s, and whilst I dislike the mechanical vulnerabilities of flipping camera systems like this one, I love the functionality of being able to use any primary camera on the front.
But yeah, I’d take a Meizu 16s design any day.
