ASUS ZenFone 4 line of devices unveiled

ASUS may not be one of the usual names you think of when shopping for your next smartphone, but that has not kept the company from continuing to churn out the models and maintaining a decent presence throughout all levels of the market. Today at a launch event the company revealed several new devices comprising their ZenFone 4 series of smartphones for the upcoming year.

At the top of the line is the ZenFone 4 Pro which is equipped with a Snapdragon 835 processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of onboard storage with expansion via microSD, and a 5.5-inch HD display. This is all powered by a 3,600 mAh battery and comes equipped with a fingerprint sensor. Throughout the line one of the bigger variables between models is the camera hardware. For the ZenFone 4 Pro ASUS includes a dual 16MP/12MP rear-facing camera combination capable of 2.0x optical zoom and an 8MP camera on the front side.

The main phone in the line and a step down in terms of specs is the ZenFone 4. This is expected to be the workhorse of the line and comes with a Snapdragon 660 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage while the battery has been toned down to a 3,000 mAh unit. Trading off zoom capabilities, the ZenFone 4 instead gets a 12MP/8MP dual camera setup capable of wide-angle shots. Even the front-facing camera, another 8MP unit, is capable of wide-angle shots.

Moving on down the line, the next device is the ASUS ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro. As may be expected, the processor drops down a bit more, this time to Snapdragon 625, but the device does get the same 4GB of RAM with 64GB of storage and a 3,000 mAh battery. Around on the back side ASUS includes a single 16MP camera sensor. As the name implies, the action for this device lies in the front-facing selfie camera which is a dual lens unit with a whopping 24MP sensor combined with a 5MP sensor. The front-facing camera gets features you typically see for the rear-facing camera, like wide-angle capability and HDR mode.

Another selfie oriented smartphone from ASUS is the ASUS ZenFone 4 Selfie which is equipped with a Snapdragon 430 processor. Unlike the other units, ASUS also pulls back on the display a bit opting for a 1280×720 resolution instead of the full HD the devices have. Like the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro, the regular ZenFone 4 Selfie sees dual-cameras up front including a 20MP sensor and an 8MP sensor capable of capturing wide-angle selfies. On the backside this device gets a 16MP camera.

The new ZenFone 4 devices all come loaded with Android 7.x and the ASUS ZenUI interface which has been updated to version 4 which is supposedly cleaner and leaner than previous versions.

Pricing and market information is still pending, but we anticipate ASUS will stick with Asian markets for these devices. Depending on the device, some different color options will be available like Midnight Black, Sunlight Gold, Mint Green, Deepsea Black, or Rouge Red.
